RAPID CITY, Mich., (WPBN/WGTU) — Students at Rapid City Elementary School are getting their hands dirty this school year as they learn the basics of gardening through a new initiative.
The school has partnered with the Rapid City Community Garden, which is located behind the school and has been vacant for several years.
Friday marked the first day of its reopening.
Students began planting seeds and pulling weeds as part of their science curriculum, which includes hands-on opportunities in the garden.
Loren Schwab, a second and third grade teacher at the school, reminisced about her own experiences with the community garden during her time as a student.
“You don’t always takeaway everything that you learn in school and I don’t always remember what I was learning back in second grade but I took away I still remember all my days at the community garden and the composting and that really truly made a difference because now I have my own garden and now I am able to do that because I have all the background that I need,” said Schwab.
Classes will meet weekly in the garden to care for and monitor the growth of their plants.
The school is seeking community donations to support the program, including gardening tools, watering cans, straw, mulch, tarps, and trash and scrap collection bins.
