Title says it, finally put down my Tuff Turf After Dark on Friday now questioning myself if I went too heavy on the straw. Just don’t want to see my seed go to waste! (Southern Indiana)

Yes i think so… its suppose to be thin layer at like 50% coverage.. think this is too much and will smother

Just relax and see what comes in. I don’t think you’ll have much luck at this stage trying to remove

  3. It may be slightly too heavy, but it shouldn’t cause any major issues. After some watering and wind you’ll lose 20%-30% of it.

The grass should still be able to germinate and I don’t see it causing any major issues.

You’ll cause more issues trying to blow it or rake it out.

That looks like straw mulch, no?  Maybe a little too heavy

Our soil and water conservation district says if you are using straw from bales, it’s not possible to put it down too heavy.

Grass can grow through some crazy stuff. You’ll be fine

  6. Edit: forgot to clarify this is EZ Straw mulch not just generic straw

Naw, you’re fine. Straw will let plenty of sunlight through, and grass shoots won’t have any problem penetrating through it.

Did you make sure to apply a seeding safe preemergent though? That straw will certainly have lots of weed seeds; with a high chance of nutsedge.

Yes.. but also peat moss is so much better to use than straw which can contain weeds and straw mites.. and is a pita to clean up.

It’s near pretty heavy but man you did a nice job without a chopper.

Yes but the grass will still come through

Well since straw *is* grass, this is your new lawn now! Congrats!

  12. User-no-relation

well it’s too late to do anything now. Just cross your fingers I guess.

    You don’t need any straw

  13. I really wouldn’t worry too much OP. It’s a little heavy coverage but not terrible. we are going into winter soonish so it’ll provide good nutrients throughout that time.

  14. Only time will tell! I like the idea. But in my eye when I see it I see a big thatch layer. If you can get enough water thru it seed will germinate and blades will push thru the straw. Me, after it starts growing I would want to get if off. But that’s just me.

Looks like you put down mulch. Good luck…
