Smells vaguely…citrusy? And the juice is staining things bright yellow.

  1. Agree with the other comment, walnut. Careful with that juice, the staining is very difficult to remove from clothing and skin.

These are nuts that have not yet ripened

Black walnuts. The husk will stain everything black. They’re awful.

You can make some beautiful wood stain with the green hulls.

Keep them away from dogs. Black walnuts are toxic to them.

This is what walnuts look like when they grow on the tree. Fun fact: because these fruits have fleshy outer layer, walnuts aren’t considered nuts. They’re seeds.

I really love the smell of the green shell, we have a black walnut tree in our yard. Nocino is a liquor made from the green walnuts.

Squirrels plant a lotta walnut trees in this world…

Fun fact: the Latin name for black walnut is Juglans Nigra, which translates to English as “God’s black knob”.

Black walnut. Be careful with that thing or you’ll never get the stain off your hands. It’s what people used to use to stain wood.

There’s enough black walnut there to kill a horse

We call them monkey balls around here

Can confirm, black walnut. We have one and it’s a bumper crop this year, the squirrels are having a blast burying nuts for the winter.

Great for cursing. wish I had some.

    Better known as “monkey balls”

Definitely black walnut. We have them all over my neighborhood. I assume some animals eat the nut, but I’ve never seen it and, based on how they feel when walking over them, I would think they could only be opened with a jackhammer
