My son died recently and I'm trying to figure out how to care for his many succulents. Any idea what this is? Also, I'd like to ship several small succulents from Indiana to Oregon. What's the best way to do this. Thanks!

  1. I’m so sorry for your loss… this is a gasteria. It’s an easy plant, mine have been sitting in a pot in the shade all summer without any water at all. Put it in well draining soil and out of direct sunlight. It does like to have light, just not the direct, scorching kind.

Let it adjust for a few days before watering, then water like any succulent – a good, thorough watering and then waiting until the soil dries completely.

It’s a Gasteria family succulent called Ox Tongue. I remember getting mine from Ikea years ago and mine are still doing great.

I’m so sorry for you loss. As for question on shipping succulents. You will want the soil to dry out completely, up pot the plant, and I’ve had success with packaging them in a hand rolled cardboard tube, rubber band around that and then placing a small amount of toilet paper/paper towels in the open ends. Making sure you have plenty of cushion in the package so plants don’t get tossed completely around during transit. If I can give any more details please let me know. I hope this helps and again I am so sorry
