Im making my first foam background, and part of the plan is integrated filtration via a waterfall feature. Ive got the waterfall figured out and the plumbing was easy, but I realized as I stepped back this morning that Ihave no way to keep my sponge pads(for mechanical filtration) in place. I had planned to cut them to size and trim the hole to accommodate them but realized that unless I get a perfect first fit, theyre gonna be a hassle for the life of the aquarium.

What would be a good way to get them to stay in place but still be removable for cleaning? Im going to the hardware store in the morning so be creative lmao

P.s. i know this is technically an aquarium/riparium, dont kill me mods

    – build a cage/box the size of your filter media using egg crate + cable ties.
    – foam around the cage & sculpt as needed
    – make a ‘lid’ for the box with cut outs for the tubing
    – mask off the tops of the cage & tubing using plastic film or masking tape etc. to stop foam adhering.
    – foam & sculpt the lid to hide tubes

if all goes well the lid should be snug, but removable with a bit of a wiggle.

    Nice blueprint lol

Just make sure to scrape the foam later to create a natural look. And since it is art after all, take your time. Do not leave the foam as is (it will look like black faeces). You can use the foam as an adhesive for rocks and pebbles (make sure to press it in)

That’s about it, maybe get a reference image to get an idea of what you are looking to make.
