One of my man ferns lost all of its fronds earlier this year. I thought it was dead, but I’m very glad to see new ones coming through.

Does anyone have any idea why this happed or what I can do to prevent it happening again?

I thought it might be a lack of water because we had a long dry spell.

    Almost always water

They need a good drenching of the top and trunk at least once a week. Sometimes more in summer if particularly hot and dry.

    They hate completely drying out.

  2. Do dry, hot and exposed.

Think about where you see man ferns growing naturally.

They’re tough bastards but they will never thrive unless they’re in a protected, wet, semi shaded spot. You can bend the rules slightly but not too much, they’ll survive but never look great.

They go black if sun/heat burnt otherwise it’s water

    1. For goodness sake, get a decent pair of secateurs and spend an hour tidying them up. They’re a mess. You dont deserve custody of them. /s

    2. Why are they called man ferns?? They’re tree ferns. Either Dicksonia, the Smooth tree fern, but more likely Cyathea australis, Rough Tree fern

    3. Get rid of that ivy before it takes over.

    4. Water. Water. Water. (From the top of the fern, where the growing tip is.)
