As Grow a Garden continues to evolve since adding cooking in the Cooking Event, we’ve come across more hungry NPCs to feed. By giving them food and even cake when it’s their birthday, you can get rewards and unlock new shop tabs. Find out how to feed all NPCs in Grow a Garden, what you can get from them, and their birthdays too!
How to Feed All NPCs in Grow a Garden
For those who may not know, an NPC is a non-player character like Sam, Raphael, or one of many other characters. While you may not be able to play as them, you certainly can feed certain ones! By doing so, you can get rewards related to a specific event or increase your friendship level with them to unlock new items for purchase.
Fortunately, for most Grow a Garden NPCs, all you have to do is equip the food you want to feed them and then interact with them. For example, if you’re playing on PC, you can walk up to Sam with a Smoothie out and hold the “E” button to feed him. This will then increase your friendship level with Sam. Before you do, just know that you can only feed him once per 24 hours!
Knowing how to feed some characters in Grow a Garden can be confusing since many of them don’t have dialogue options to make it clear. But, once you hold a food type in your hands, you’ll either see a friendship level appear or an option to feed them.
If you don’t have any food to feed Sam or other NPCs, you’ll need to cook it first. The main way to do this is to unlock the Cooking Kit by completing certain achievements and then throw some ingredients into that for a recipe. I recommend checking our Cooking Recipes List so you can make the best rarity meals to get the most points when giving them to characters.
Here’s how many points you’ll get for each meal rarity that you can feed NPCs:
Common Recipes – 1 Point Uncommon Recipes – 2 Points Rare Recipes – 3 Points Legendary Recipes – 4 Points Mythical Recipes – 5 Points Divine Recipes – 6 Points Prismatic Recipes – 7 Points Transcendent Recipes – 8 Points NPC Rewards From Feeding Them in Grow a Garden
Many NPCs function differently in how you can feed them, as well as what rewards you’ll get from doing so. While some characters may ask for certain food that they’re craving, others may not care what you feed them. This can lead to unique event rewards and access to new shop tabs as you increase your friendship with them!
This section is a work-in-progress while we learn more about each NPCs rewards from feeding them and their birthdays too.
Sam the Seed Stall Trader
As previously mentioned, Sam has three friendship levels you can reach to unlock new seeds for purchase. However, these seeds require Garden Coins to buy. And as we also mentioned before, you can only feed Sam once per 24 hours.

Raphael the Pet Stall Trader
Raphael is the third NPC added to Grow a Garden where you can increase your friendship level with them to unlock new items. While we’re pretty sure you can get items like a Pet Lead or a Rainbow Lollipop, we’re still confirming the details.

While you can’t currently grow your friendship with Eloise, she does have a birthday where you can feed her cake for rewards. It’s possible this may change at a later time to reveal a friendship tab with new gear to get.
The Giant
The Giant was part of the Beanstalk Update where you could feed them any food type to increase their friendship level. This would then unlock new items in the Goliath’s Goods friendship shop tab. Here are the friendship tab items alongside other useful information:

Chris P. the Pig Chef
The pig chef, Chris P., was the first NPC we could feed, starting during the Cooking Event. Feeding him gave you all sorts of rewards like seeds, pets, items, and more. Depending on the rarity of your meal, you would get better rewards. And he even had a craving each hour that would give you better rewards too.
Rat Connoisseur
The Rat Connoisseur was added in the Kitchen Storm Update, where you could feed him mutated food. Similar to the Fairy Event, you could pick one of three rewards each time you fed him a meal. Unlike later NPCs that you can create a friendship with, the Rat Connoisseur didn’t have this feature.
All NPC Birthdays in Grow a Garden
Birthdays were added on September 6, 2025, as a way to celebrate character birthdays in-game while also earning rewards from feeding them. Instead of feeding someone a random food, you should bake them a cake for their special day. If you’re not sure what ingredients you need, be sure to check our guide on How to Make Cake. When this feature was first added, a countdown near the top-right corner became visible for Eloise’s birthday.
It showed a date of December 16 as the current day, which isn’t consistent with reality. However, one theory is that this could be because days are quicker in Grow a Garden. We haven’t been able to confirm if this is the case yet. Therefore, when you see a birthday date below, just know that it doesn’t line up with real life.
While we’re still learning the birthdays of other characters and how long it takes for days to count down, we’ll make a note of them below. Similar to Eloise, certain characters will also have a message saying they can only be fed Cake on their birthday.
Eloise’s Birthday: March 4 Isaac’s Birthday: Unknown Raphael’s Birthday: Unknown Sam’s Birthday: Unknown
