We are having geothermal added to our house and they dug into our driveway. Our options were put the mud in the yard or pay a few grand for a dumpster to haul it away. Our yard floods frequently from our neighbors’ higher yards, so I look at the mud as a potential way to raise the yard a bit. We would like to have it be grassy next summer, so how should I treat it? Mix other stuff into it (sand, loam?), spread it around, a combination of things? Thx

That mud is dirt and not soil, and probably a lot of clay from the looks of it. If you want to spread it out and level your yard and still end up with green grass, sooner rather than later, you’re going to need a lot of organic material to make soil out of it. Finely composted materials will probably be the fastest. Biochar would speed things up, too. If it’s too much clay and you end up with a waterproof cap over your old lawn, sand along with the organic matter would help with that. A think layer of finely ground woodchips would break down into good soil and improve drainage, but it might take a few years. Deep roots are your friend. It will break up the compaction and allow for water infiltration deep into the soil and help with flooding and erosion.
