The other purpose of raised beds is to keep the soil loose and fluffy which is a lot harder to do if you let people step in and walk around on the soil surface of your raised bed (while they compact the soil). I'm jealous of your beds! Some of mine are ready to be replaced. What kind of wood are yours made of?

    For the fire ants here in 8B SC that get into my raised beds, I cover their hill area plus and extra few inches around it with food grade diatomaceous earth.
