I got this dumb cane 4 years ago (named it Phil) and it was barely 1’ tall and only had 2 leaves and now it was almost 4’ tall and had so many leaves!!! I watered it like I always do, let it drain, and i went back and it had completely broken in half!!! I know it’ll grow back from the broken stem but i am just gutted! It was too top heavy and i guess my stake/ring wasn’t strong enough. I don’t actually need help just need people to mourn with me and figured you would all understand my pain.

You actually might be able to save it. Put some honey on the cut and tape the plant back together and on the pole!

This is the normal habit for *Dieffenbachia*. It’s one of the ways they propagate themselves.

You know what’s cool? Just hover that bad boy above water/ just the tip. She’ll grow roots in a couple days (should)

I can’t read so im sorry for the unfortunate events that lead to Phil’s shortcomings. I wish him the speediest recovery 🙏

  5. Both pieces will still grow. Put the leaves and stem in water and it’ll root- then plant it.

Just put it in water new roots will grow for sure e

Heartbreaking, but it sounds like you can root the top half and let the bottom half do its thing, too. TWO plants from the one. #winning but heartbreaking and shocking now, I know.

Wishing Phil a speedy recovery with the added bonus of a sibling. In 4 short years you’ll have two teenagers to cause more havoc and plant hospital bills.

We can regrow it. Better, faster, stronger.

I certainly do. I had one several years ago that did the exact same as yours. I was heartbroken. I share your pain.😔😞

Every cloud has a silver lining because you can have two.

Good news! You now have 2 Diffenbachia!

That plant is easy to propagate. Just stick it back in good soil, then provide lots of sun and water. Don’t forget to wear gloves or wash your hands immediately. Its sap is very irritating to skin and also toxic to animals when eaten.

We’ve gathered here today to honor and pay our respects to Phil. Phil was a loving plant, a devoted oxygen provider, and was loved by mother in laws everywhere. And while some referred to him as a dumb cane, Phil truly was wise plant. He proved strength in the face of adversity by growing beyond his expected size and living on when everyone thought he could not survive. We are saddened by the tragic loss of Phil’s head but we take heart in knowing that his head will rise again after being planted into nurturing soil. We love you Phil, you will be missed, but we will cherish the new starts that come from your loss.

Might be a better choice to put it in a pot of sand. Keep it wet and it will root quickly.

  25. shirley1524

Just propagate it and put it back in the pot. I purposely chop mine down every summer because she gets too big and I don’t have room for her. I’ve propagated new plants for my cousins and my aunts from this process.

  26. HicoCOFox-

Let it get root bound and it will be much stronger and fuller – downsize the pot
