So i grabbed a second hand compost bin and have planned to repair it. I will just need to replace the corroded shaft.
I was just wondering what type of metal shaft would be safe to have in a compost bin, compost that will eventually make it in with my vegetables for consumption. Or any other ideas would be apprediated.
I do feel as though I am overthinking this but worth asking the question. Cheers.

Stainless steel would be best, otherwise aluminium or copper. Copper might be a bit soft in smaller gauges.

Be sure you don’t mistake chrome plated mild steel (often used as curtain rails etc) as stainless steel. It will rust the same way it has done so already.

Maze who makes this sort of bin upgraded their centre shaft. I’d send them this photo and get a replacement via them

Maybe put a piece of PVC pipe over a new metal (for strength) one?

We just contacted Maze and they sent one for free 🙂

Bugger, binned mine a few weeks ago that had this exact issue. Glad to hear that Maze are replacing them though.

Turn bin on its top. Cut one end off, sit it on ground. Cut other end, make a cover. Improve your compost bin by allowing ground contact. No pole needed.
