Picked up this Giant Sequoia at my local nursery for $30. Thoughts?

Worth it in my opinion. Largest tree species in the world in bonsai form feels super fun, but since there is not a ton of info about treating these as bonsai, you are going to have to do some work figuring out how to bonsai this thing. I have one that’s a similar size, still experimenting with how to keep it happy before even bothering to get to design.

I did a giant sequoia from a seedling, found out they only live about five years unless there environment is perfect.

  3. Definitely challenging as a bonsai, but good price for a tree of that size. Good luck and keep us updated on how it goes.

I would buy it just to try it out. For comparison, I paid $9 for a small seedling from Jonsteen and it’s done very well so far despite the summer heat and my inconsistent watering. It’s probably helpful that they’re native to zone 9; maybe it will help it live longer a little bit longer, but I’d still be very careful with it. Summer water may be tricky, especially when it’s hot, but shade will help on those days. I’ve seen guides that advise misting often to mimic their natural habitat, but these guys live in the Sierra mountains where it generally isn’t foggy and only rains intermittently in the summer, so I think that advice is meant for coast redwoods.
