Only planted the tree last year and I feel I’ve had a bumper crop! But what do I do with them?

  1. We used to have a very prolific plum tree, we built up a big reserve of recipes over the years. Plums make good jam, if you cook them a bit so the stones detach then you can easily sieve the stones out using a colander. But they’re pretty easy to remove with a knife anyway. The bakes oatmeal recipe from the 101 cookbooks site works well with stone fruit (ignore the other fruits she puts in there) as a breakfast dish. I’d also suggest stoning them and freezing them in portion sizes (eg enough for a crumble).

    Jam

There was a guy on here with an app to share produce but I can’t remember what it was called.

I don’t want to be greedy, so I’ll just take a pear off you..

We made some plum gin which is very drinkable!!

Bavarian Zwetschgendatschi or if you’re from northern Germany, top it with crumble.

Take the stones out and freeze a bunch to later use in crumbles, jams, etc.

Jam, pies and crumbles. A vacuum sealer is perfect for long term storage.

See if any of your neighbours will do a regular/yearly swap with you! If they have apples or any other desirable fruit, you can trade some of yours for some of theirs!

Otherwise, I suggest jam. If you still can’t use it all, perhaps give them to friends/family or leave a box outside with a sign that says they’re free. Plenty of people in need of fresh fruit!

We made plum & chilli jam with ours, currently have 10 jars of it

The freezer is your friend, also cooked and sieved then puréed make a fantastic flavour to add to Prosecco(think Bellini).

Everyone has tons this year but some year there aren’t any! Enjoy!

    Plum liqueur.

You’ll need a mason jar or an empty glass bottle, a bag of soft brown sugar, unwaxed lemons and a litre of cheapo supermarket vodka.

Put the vodka through coffee filters four times.

Wash and slice a load of plums and a lemon. Fill the mason jar with the fruit.
Add a third of a bag of sugar to the fruit.

You can add a cinnamon stick and cloves or star anise.
Cover the fruit and sugar with vodka.

Shake a few times a week. Enjoy on bonfire night.

First, I would check for larvae. Had loads of my tree but all infested. 😭

Share them with your neighbours. Then go home and bake Plum crumble. 😋

Nigel Slater’s book “Real Fast Puddings” has a recipe for plums baked in sauternes that is extremely fast and very tasty:

Even if you don’t like cream (I don’t) then you still want to add some to this when you serve: it’s essential.

Sauterenes is a desert wine, but I’ve made this both with sweet sherry and just with regular cheap sweet white wine and it’s worked well with both. I suspect a desert wine would be best, and you might want to be slightly generous with the sugar if you use anything else.

Your body might not thank you for making 8.5 kg of this, but once you try it once you might find it solves some of your enviable problem!

    Plum and sloe vinegar.

    Good value replacement for balsamic

My gran used to make vats of greengage jam every year, I absolutely loved the stuff. Pretty sure plum jam would be a real treat!

Very jealous and wish we’d planted plum and apple trees. Put in a cherry 3 years ago and haven’t had a single one off it thanks to the birds!

    Make:
    – Plum jam
    – Umeshu
    – Plum pie
    – Prune juice
    – Dried plums (that can easily be snacked on or chopped up and added to cakes, Christmas pudding etc)

Mum had 19kg of miracots this year (cross between a plum and an apricot) she gave loads away to neighbours, made jam, halved and stoned for the freezer, crumbles, cake (just halved and stoned with cake batter on top like an upside down cake) and of course she ate loads. You can prep and freeze crumbles into foil containers for an easy future pudding.

Jam… and stone, stew and freeze in portions for crumbles and pies over winter.

    Plumble is the only answer.

Where did you get the tree and how old was it, please?

I have stewed plums with Greek yoghurt and granola for breakfast it’s very nice. Steadily filling my freezer up with tubs of it. Chutneys also good but making it does stink.
