If you’ve never heard of a “traffic garden,” you’re probably not alone. These unique, scaled-down street networks for children to practice biking and road safety are popping up all over the country. And the newest one is right here in Boca Raton’s North Park.

The traffic garden is the latest addition to the northeast recreational area of Boca Raton, formerly the Ocean Breeze Golf Course in Boca Teeca. The North Park Traffic Garden sits on the former tennis courts located at Jeffrey Street and Second Avenue, just across the street from the forthcoming Boca Paddle. (Local tip: Put 5805 N.W. 2nd Ave. into your GPS and you’ll spot the Traffic Garden from there!)

“A traffic garden is more than just a miniature town—it’s a hands-on classroom for life-saving skills,” said Boca Raton Public Works and Engineering Director Zachary Bihr. “It’s a safe, controlled space where our kids can learn the rules of the road, whether they are on their bikes, their scooters, or simply walking. They’ll learn how to read traffic signs, when to cross the street, and how to share the road safely with others. This isn’t just about play; it’s about building confidence, encouraging healthy outdoor activity, and most importantly, preventing accidents.”

Traffic Garden ribbon cutting

At the ribbon cutting event this week, I noticed that portable restrooms had been added to the parking lot. Shade structures will also be built at the end of September to protect parent spectators from the sun.

When I inquired as to whether or not small “buildings” could be added to this “mini city” similar to Welleby Park in Sunrise, Fla., I was told by Boca Parks & Recreation that if a local business was interested in making their mark on the Traffic Garden, they are open to a discussion. How cute would a mini Island Water Sports or Trader Joe’s look?

The North Park Traffic Garden is completely free to use (no motorized bikes, boards or vehicles allowed), there’s plenty of parking and I have a feeling it will become even more popular when the weather cools off. Don’t forget to bring your helmets!
