I’m in 6b/7a (southern WV) and I’ve had this Sedeveria Lilac Mist in my office’s north-east facing window for around 2-2.5 years. It seems content with its growing conditions but my experience with succulents is limited.

I know the cultivar is a hybrid of burro’s tail, but I’m not sure if I should continue letting it grow on its side like it has been, or if it should (or even can) be transferred to a hanging pot to grow downward like an actual burro’s tail. It has some heft to it so I’m almost concerned it wouldn’t do well in a hanging pot. Thoughts?

I’ve got 5 of them that look the same and I’m also curious about what to do with them. I didn’t know its relationship to burros tail but with that in mind I might repot and combine mine into a hanging pot and let em’ do their thing.

    Curious what suggestions youll get

  2. I have nothing helpful to add, but wondering if it’s possible you could plant it in a long cylindrical glass, with it growing upwards to support its weight. Plus it’d look super cool.

I’m not convinced that it’s related to burro’s tail — it’s a cross between a Sedum and an Echeveria.

I agree with you it’s probably too heavy for a hanging plant. What you could probably do is cut off the end five or so inches, remove enough leaves to create a stem, and restart that in a new pot. (That means let it callous overnight, then put into fresh dry dirt, supported with chopsticks if needed, and check for roots after 2-3 weeks by wiggling gently and feeling for resistance.) You could probably make several plants out of that long escape artist, or you could just remove it and let the two offsets have the field in the original pot.

Mine have never grown so long. I love it. So beautiful.

This post inspired me to look up its parents and I didn’t know this was actually patented!

There are similarities drawn in the patent between it and Harry Butterfield (super burrows tail) which I’ve always known to be derived from sedum morganianum, aka burros tail.

If it were me I’d just chop and prop sections and keep the original plant

Mine is well on its way to this situation. Definitely a lilac mist… Aren’t they so cool though lol. This comment wasn’t helpful but I am curious about what to do when it gets this long

May chop and prop so you can have multiple? Kudos for keeping it lush and compact.

I might repot it just to get some fresh soil in there. I would keep it growing right where it is now. It likes that spot. I’m also the type of person that would want to see how long I could grow it. I mean, I looks healthy root to tip. That’s excellent! Plus, there is another baby in the pot. I have an Echiveria Lilac Mist. Now I need to find this. Beautiful plant, please show us what you decide.
