The fall term at Valley schools has begun, and we have at last had some welcome rain on our gardens. It really feels like that long, hot summer has finally ended. This month there’s plenty on offer for Valley gardeners, whatever your age.

Children’s Gardening Club

Next Saturday, Sept.6 the Madawaska Valley Public Library will host the final Children’s Gardening Club session of the season at 10:30am.

Madawaska Valley Seed Library

A note for Valley gardeners: If you find that you have saved more seeds than you can use in your own garden, please remember that MV Public Library will accept them for their new Seed Library. Just place each type of seed into a clearly labelled envelope and drop off at the Library.

Madawaska Valley Gardening Club Plant Sale

As well, if you have perennial plants to divide but not enough room to plant them in your own garden, please remember that the Madawaska Valley Gardening Club annual Plant Sale takes place the following weekend. On Saturday, Sept.13 you can drop off any unwanted plants at Zurakowski Park in Barry’s Bay from 8 to 9am. The plant sale takes place from 9am to 12pm and there are always plenty of bargains to be had.

MV Gardening Club Director Ritsuko Honda has some advice on how to divide your plants: “This is the time to dig and divide your perennials. Make sure you water the plant deeply the night before digging. Later this week we might have some rain. If not much rain, then we still need to water them. We appreciate your plant donations. Please drop them off at the site between 8 and 9 am.” The fall plant sale is an important fundraiser for the MV Gardening Club, so even if you’re not a member yet, please come out to donate and/or purchase some different plants for your plot.
