Saving seeds is easy (and free!). Keep only seeds that are from open-pollinated plants, meaning heirloom varieties, not the latest types. That’s because seeds from heirlooms produce plants identical to the parent plant. Seeds saved from hybrid plants (which are bred from two different varieties of plants) will not breed true, so any plant that grows from them won’t resemble the plant you took the seeds from.

Allow the seed heads or bean pods to turn brownish and dry on the plant, then harvest and let them dry thoroughly on paper towels. Seeds that are super-easy to save include cilantro, dill, marigolds, peas, beans, zinnias, nasturtium, and morning glory.
