PANAMA CITY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) – PANAMA CITY, Fla. — The Panama City Garden Club is set to reopen this fall, years after Hurricane Michael destroyed its longtime home.
Founded in 1935, the club once hosted events and traditions like the Azalea Trail competition, which ran for more than 50 years. That ended in 2018 when the storm forced members out of their building.
“Very shortly after I became president, we had Michael and of course the destruction that went with it in finding new ways to meet,” said former president Cynthia Biegler, a member for more than 60 years. She said the club even continued during the pandemic by meeting on Zoom. “I felt it was very important that we get on our feet to get going and know that yes we are going to be alright.”
The city later determined a new building was needed, clearing the way for the club’s revival.
“We’re truly a partner with them and we hope to make Panama City bloom for generations,” current president Gretchen Dubois said. “We’re blazing a new Azalea Trail now.”
A public opening is planned this fall. Membership information is available on the club’s website.
