David Thrussell is a singular force in Australia’s experimental music scene—a unique and enigmatic artist, producer, and thinker whose work challenges conventions and stirs the imagination. Known for his prolific output and uncompromising vision, Thrussell continues to release albums that traverse genres, ideologies, and sonic boundaries.

In this episode of And This One’s Introduced By…—the fourth instalment of the Goldfields Series—host Dr Gonzo parked his converted VW delivery van-slash-mobile recording studio outside David’s secluded rural home near Daylesford to capture an intimate, behind-the-scenes look at two very different creative projects.

The Goldfields Series is a collection of artist-led audio features spotlighting regional talents from Victoria’s central highlands—featuring the likes of Doc Henry, Rebecca Tolhurst, Mandy Connell, and now, the elusive David Thrussell.

As a solo artist and through his many alter egos and collaborations, Thrussell has released a vast catalogue of albums with evocative and provocative titles such as The Wonderful World of David Thrussell (Soundscapes for the Cinematically Inclined), The Fetid Fungi, Eros Maximus, and Lies Inc., the latter released under the name Snog—his long-running electro-industrial project known for its razor-sharp political commentary.

But in this first episode, the focus is on The Brutal Gardener, the latest release from Black Lung, Thrussell’s legendary darkwave/industrial alias. Known for its dense sonic textures, dystopian themes, and eerie atmospherics, Black Lung continues to push the boundaries of electronic music—and The Brutal Gardener is no exception.

Stay tuned next week for a track by track look at David Thrussell’s latest Hillbillies From Hell compilation.

Join Dr Gonzo and David Thrussell as Mr Thrussell delves into the creative process, inspiration, and sonic landscapes behind The Brutal Gardener, track by track, in this episode of And This One’s Introduced By….
