The Master Gardeners are accepting applications for basic training. The deadline to apply is Sept. 12 at 4:30 p.m..

Union County is offering a Master Gardener basic training class online, where you use your own computer in the convenience of your home to learn at your own pace, according to the press release. The fee includes training book and name badge. Trainee will be assigned a mentor to help if needed.

The press release said Master Gardener trainees will attend 40 hours of basic training taught by University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture specialists and county agents in topics ranging from flower and vegetable gardening, lawn care, ornamental trees and shrubs, disease and weed control, pesticide safety and soils and fertilizers. Participants are required to volunteer 40 hours of service the first year and 20 in subsequent years to the Union County Master Gardener program.

The press release stated there are several projects to do that require volunteer hours. Some of those are the South Arkansas Arts Center, Barton Library, Historic Newton House Museum, Union County Cooperative Extension, and Newhaven Recovery Lodge.

The course runs Oct. 6 through Dec. 12 and costs $140, which covers a training book, classes and a badge. Applicants must have access to their own computer to complete the program

SouthArk Expo

The Union County Master Gardeners will be participating in the SouthArk Outdoor Expo this Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.. They will be located in the El Dorado Conference Center, where members will be offering gardening advice along with recruiting new members to sign up for their upcoming training.
