Liberty Garden residents get free back-to-school makeovers

ROME, N.Y. — With local school kids set to return to the classroom this week, social media will soon be flooded with back-to-school pictures.

That means students are going to want to look their best.

At Liberty Garden Apartments in Rome Tuesday evening, the Rome Housing Authority saw to it that residents there would be looking their best when the school bell rings at the start of the school year.

They arranged for over 50 of them to receive free haircuts and manicures in the Liberty Gardens Community Room and parking lot.

There were also hygiene bag giveaways, along with games, and prizes.

The goal was to build confidence, pride and excitement in students as they head back to the classroom.

“Looking good. That was our whole motto,” said Rome Housing Authority Executive Director Tami Lucia.

“We wanted to give the kids the inspiration and make them feel good about going back to school. A lot of the parents here unfortunately cannot afford haircuts, so we just wanted to help as much as we could as their property manager to be able to get these kids to go back to school with confidence,” Lucia said.

Lucia added that they hope to expand the program to the entire Rome community next year.
