I bought planters like the one in photo in 2020. The seller said the wood have been treated but I found out yesterday that a considerable part of the planters have disintegrated/rotted.

I’m now looking for new planters and I wonder whether any of you have suggestions in terms of type of wood or treatment to make them last longer.

Or should I just stick with terra cotta ones?! Are big/deep terra cotta ones good in retaining water or do I need to constantly water the plants especially when we have a dry summer?

Treated softwood doesn’t last long especially if you don’t line them (not sure if you did). Hardwood lasts longer but you will still have to try and keep the water away from it if you can. The thinner the wood also the less it will last.

Your planters were treated – i think you think they weren’t.

Terracotta doesn’t keep water in well and will also not last if you leave them outside when it freezes.

To last you need glazed ceramic.

They look like decking boards, which would have been treated. However, any cuts would need treating too. Where did they rot? Was there drainage?

I always line mine with heavy duty polythene. It prolongs their life but eventually they rot out.
