A Garden City resident says he’s been left feeling baffled after downspouts were stolen off the sides of multiple homes in his neighbourhood last week, including his own.
Harrison Mariano said the thefts, which he believed affected 10 of his neighbours, happened within just a few minutes on the morning of Aug. 26.
Footage from Mariano’s home security camera shows a silver van pulling up in front of a home’s garage and a person dressed in all black jumping out and quickly ripping a downspout from the side of the home before getting back into the van and driving away.
“I can’t believe that somebody would do this,” Mariano said. “Nobody would steal downspouts. I don’t know what the purpose is, but if you’re talking about money, that’s nothing.”
He said there’s very little money to be made if the alleged thief took the downspouts to sell for scrap metal. One of his neighbours paid about $80 for two replacement downspouts from the hardware store last week, he said.
“It’s ridiculous. If you’re doing that for money, I don’t know what to say, that’s nothing,” Mariano said.
Mariano said he has filed a report with Winnipeg police and sent them the video.
A spokesperson for Winnipeg police told CBC News that officers are aware of the thefts and are looking into it.
