I installed this front yard patio for under $500 with minimal digging thanks to synthetic paver base panels (Brock PaverBase). They seemed costly at first but I saved on having to buy and deliver a large amount of HPB or limestone screening. I saved time and waste created if having to dig at least 3″ deeper with the use of traditional paver base like gravel, limestone screening, or HPB. It was also easier and quicker to install patio pavers with the synthetic panels underneath since it was OK to walk on them and rearrange the pavers to optimize the overall stone layout or pattern. And the best part: less or no sagging compared to traditional paver base!

Easy DIY patio pavers installed with Brock PaverBase panels (light weight synthetic high density foam panels which are easy to cut with a box cutter). Minimal digging. Easy levelling with regular sand. No machine compactor needed. These panels eliminate the need for limestone screening or HPB. Easy to rearrange panels as needed (not as easy to rearrange with limestone/HPB). Reduced risks of sagging – no sagging so far after 2 harsh Canadian winters, record rain fall and flash floods, and after piling snow up high on the patio.

I used only basic tools and materials for this project, including:

– Ryobi angle grinder #ryobi
– Exacto knife
– Tamper
– Brock PaverBase panels #brockpaverbase
– Play sand (cheapest kind)
– NextGel polymeric sand (grout)
– Paver stones
– Paver edging
– Concrete curb stones
– Flagstone step

I followed these easy instructions: https://brockpaverbase.com/install-guide-new-project/

Steps:
1. Dig out any grass, roots, etc.
2. Level ground with any adjacent driveway if desired
3. Use manual tamper to flatten ground
4. Lay good quality landscape fabric over soil
5. Spread 1-2″ layer of regular play sand over fabric
6. Level sand with long straight board
7. Lay paver base panels over sand in staggered orientation
8. Place paver stones over panels
9. Spread polymeric (grout) sand over pavers
10. Tap with tamper lightly on pavers to get sand into gaps between stones
11. Repeat steps 9 and 10 to fill any air pockets created in grouts
11. Spray water over pavers per polymeric sand instructions

As part of the prep work I cut the side of the driveway to ensure a rectified/square edge along the side of the driveway adjacent to the patio. I used my Ryobi angle grinder with a diamond blade for this task and this proved to be quite easy as the driveway asphalt was not nearly as thick as the pavers I was cutting with the same angle grinder.

  1. I’m about to do mine soon. I was going to do basic 12 X 12 pavers but this look has me reconsidering!

  2. Does it freeze where you live? I'm wondering if you prepped the gravel and layers beneath the cloth first for ground freezing and shifting? It looks great!

  3. Looks very nice but over did it w material you put a weed protector sand and sintético pavers to put the cement pavers. Just saying

  4. Looks good. Just a heads up, if your using polymeric sand, you really should wear a mask. That stuff is really fine and can get into the lungs easily and its not good for ya. Just saying.

  5. Great work !
Can I try same technique for 3meterx3meter corner around lawn?
Also please send a link of detailed video so that I can start planning steps .
    Thank you 🙏
