I rescued this one from my mother in law. Forgot to take a picture from before, but the pot was only half full with the roots completely showing, the soil was essentially mud, and it was in one of those pots with a wick in it. I know they hate repotting, but I had to check for root rot since it was soaking wet. Is it a loss cause? This is my first calathea, but I'm willing to try if the pros say it's worth it. All advice is welcome!

Personally I’d say yeah, roots look good. I’ve had “dead” ones come back strong.
It’s definitely salvageable. It will take time and patience, they are slow growers but it looks good. Make sure you put it in a nice warm, sunny position until it starts to shoot up new leaves. And be careful not to over water it, it won’t use as much water when it doesn’t have any leaves to support. 🤞
Oh yes definitely
