The Los Alamos Master Gardeners Club (LAMGC) invites the community to help celebrate its 3 decades of stewardship of the garden, with a bit of food and to appreciate this County gem, 5:30-7 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 4 at the Demonstration Garden.
When the Los Alamos Master Gardeners Club formed in the summer of 1994, no one could have predicted the breadth or length of service to the community. Coming together as newly minted graduates of the NMSU Master Gardener Program, the original members just wanted to continue the camaraderie they had developed through the 16-week program.
As a mix of new, new to New Mexico, and accomplished gardeners, the enthusiasm for sharing was infectious and the LAMGC took off running.
In 1995, the group was asked to assume stewardship of the Xeriscape Garden by Solveig Palanek, former Los Alamos Cooperative Extension Horticulture Agent. They said “yes!”
Since its inception, the LAMGC has led two sessions of the Master Gardener Training Program, hosted many Garden Tours across the county, started the Master Gardener State Conference, and brought numerous public programs to the County. The Demonstration Garden is its largest project.
In 2002, they successfully competed to partner with the County to expand the garden, renaming it The Demonstration Garden, reflecting its broader educational purpose.
As volunteers for NMSU Cooperative Extension Service, LAMGC is committed to continuing research-based outreach to the public for many years to come.
The Demonstration Garden is on the southeast corner of Oppenheimer and Central, across the parking lot from the Justice Center.
With an area of over 0.5 acres, it showcases a wide variety of plants, techniques, and landscape ideas for the public. LAMGC maintains an online database of the plants at lamgonline.org.
Individuals with a disability in need of an auxiliary aid or service to participate, please contact Los Alamos Cooperative Service in advance at 505.646.2656 or losalamos@nmsu.edu.
New Mexico State University is an equal opportunity/affirmative action employer and educator. NMSU and the U.S. Department of Agriculture cooperating.
