OPENING the 45th annual show of Caddlehill Allotment Gardens on Saturday, Lady Elizabeth Shaw Stewart complimented exhibitors on the high standard displayed, despite this summer’s inclement weather.

“Gardeners in this part of the world,” she said, “must have a very disappointing time occasionally, and this year it must have been very difficult to bring a bloom up to exhibition standard.

“It shows great determination and remarkable skill on the part of the gardeners here, that we can see the sort of show which is on display.

“I would like to pay a great tribute to all the people who have worked so hard.”

Her husband’s grandfather gave to the town the ground on which the allotments stood and if he were alive today, she was sure he would be very surprised at the result of all the hard work.

It had been her privilege, said Lady Shaw Stewart, to open three flower shows in the locality and it had been extremely interesting.

She had always been told that the Caddlehill Allotment Gardens were among the best in this part of the world.

“I am very glad to have been allowed to see the exhibits and to walk round,” she declared, “and to know that the story is true and I congratulate you on this extremely good exhibition.”
