Hey all,

Just picked this fiddle leaf fig up about a month ago from a local nursery.

Planning on repotting it ASAP but wanted some experienced input on a few things:

  1. Pot size recommendation
  2. Soil mix recommendation
  3. Prune the roots or no?

I've done a substantial amount of online searching but it seems all the results or answers vary drastically.

The tree is approx 6' tall and age is unknown. Its still in the plastic nursery pot that its been in for who knows how long

Please refer to photos.

Thanks in advance for any help you might be able to offer!

TL;DR – I know how to care for the tree already, my concern is moreso correct pot sizing and if the roots need pruning at this point

Current nursery pot size is approx 11″ diameter at the top and 8″ diameter at the bottom

I’ve never ever heard about pruning FLF roots.

Also hard to tell from the photos but it needs to be in bright light, these pics look too dark.

Move it to the sunniest window in your home. Do not prune the roots or re-pot right away. Be aware that these plants are very sensitive to being moved. It might drop a few leaves while getting acclimated. Once it’s settled in, in a nice sunny spot, then you can re-pot.

Since you just got it don’t do anything right now. Place it by the window, bottom water once a week, Use liquid fertilizer in the water. Once it’s happy in the new spot you can repot in the spring.

You need a bigger pot, one that’s 2” wider than the nursery pot.

Get it to a spot in front of a window or get a couple growlights that shine light on all leaves

Place in a pot 2 inches wider than the nursery pot it came in when you repot. Use a potting soil with moisture control and mix in perlite. I also like to use FLF food in the summer and spring to encourage it to grow. I know nothing about pruning FLF. I would just leave it alone in a bright spot in your home once repotted.

Needs bright, indirect light to thrive. Use a moisture meter ($10 on Amazon) and water when it is right at the bottom end of moist/dry. They don’t need a big pot either. I have a 9 foot tall FLF that’s in a 4 gallon pot.
