Hi friends,
Just was given this as a pretty urgent rehabbing project. Little known of its past, but as of right now definitely not thriving. I'm wondering where you all would start with a plant in this kind of shape?
I'm thinking it looks over potted, and I'm seeing aphids and at least one spider mite (only feel confident on the spider mite ID because I was picking dead leaves off the soil with tweezers and incidentally grabbed a very thin line of web and watched a tiny white mite climb up the line, otherwise I haven't seen any webs anywhere so far). I'm concerned about the possibility of other kinds of mites, or potentially crown or root rot, but I'm pretty new to African Violets so I wanted to see if anyone has advice on where to start on this. Since these photos I did go over the leaves with a q-tip soaked in alcohol to try to take off the visible dirt and bugs, but I'm guessing a more thorough overhaul and/or some miticide may be in order. Was originally going to start with a repot, partly so I could do a good root inspection, but now I'm wondering if I need to start with pest control first?
Any advice appreciated, and also please let me know if you think this might be beyond a semi-novice's capabilities… I've rehabbed some other plants, including a maidenhair, button fern, and aluminum plant, but none of them had this kind of pest related concern involved (though I have had to tackle some fungus gnat and spider mite issues with my plants so I'm not completely new to pests). I wasn't informed about the pest issues before I was given this one so I was expecting more of a pot/light/watering revamp, to be honest. Happy to see what I can do but don't want to go all in if this is past the point of no return.
Thank you!!
