May Container Garden Tour! In this video, I’m giving you a peek into how my container garden is doing this month. I’ve been growing a mix of vegetables and herbs in containers, and it’s been so rewarding to watch everything take off. From leafy greens to fruiting vines, my little garden is full of life and color. Whether you’re a beginner or just love gardening in small spaces, I hope this tour inspires you to keep growing wherever you are.
The tomatoes are fruiting beautifully, the cucumbers have already started producing, and the peppers are full of flowers — a good sign that more harvests are coming soon! My cabbages are looking especially lush and healthy in their containers, and I’m excited to see how they continue to grow. The okra and bush beans are thriving as well, adding height and structure to the setup. Even with limited space, everything seems to be working together so nicely.
On the herb side of things, I’ve got a few updates. While most of the herbs are doing well, my basil is looking a bit under the weather, so I’ll be doing some pruning to encourage healthier growth. I’ll share what I think went wrong and what I plan to do next. Thanks for joining me on this tour — be sure to like, comment, and share what’s growing in your garden this month!

Hey y’all, it’s me, the girl behind Rookie Gardening Channel or Rookie Gardening Journal. The girl behind Rookie Gardening Journal. I figured I’d come on camera and show my face today because, well, first of all, this video is mainly going to be a garden tour, but I wanted to show my face. And mind you, I was reluctant at first. I was super nervous. I have a lot of videos on my channel and I don’t show my face, right? Um, but I have seen just how much the channel has grown. I’ve seen the engagement. I’m growing like my own little mini community and I am beyond grateful to you all. I thought I’d just, you know, get on camera and bless you all. I’m just kidding. Bless you all with my presence. No, I’m just kidding. I wanted to come on here and personally thank you all for subscribing to my channel. We are close to 600 subscribers, y’all. Like, who would have thought? Like, I I I am I can’t believe it at all. I can’t I cannot believe it. When I first started the channel, it was mainly to just document my journey, right? And then I was like, you know what? I’m pretty sure I’m not the only new gardener in this space. So, let me go ahead and share what I’m learning as well. So, that’s when I started making videos on the information that I’m also learning myself. And I don’t know, I like my heart is full. My heart is full that so many of y’all are showing me love, subscribing to my channel. you know, you’re letting me know how valuable the information is and that is what keeps me making videos for you all. So, I am beyond grateful. I just wanted to come on here and say hi officially, show my face officially. I think I’m going to start coming on camera more often. And this is more so for I guess my personal growth, right? um to put myself out there and and um to not be shy in front of the camera. So, I’m going to continue to do this and yeah, we’ll see how it goes. But yeah, I just wanted to do a quick garden tour. So, let’s go ahead and do that. Right now, as you all can see, I have grown my garden space. Okay, when I first started the journey, these two blue containers and the one in the middle were the only containers that I had and I was growing cabbages in there and I had my rosemary and all. But since then, and I am looking to add more, I have added on to the garden. So, we are going to start with this tower right here. Okay. And mind you, I live in a town home community. So, as you all can see, I don’t have a lot of space, but I am going to use up or make the most of all of the space that I have, right? I’m not adding any containers on the grass, but I might I might because I am looking to add more to my garden. I have my little compost bin that I’m starting. Um, it was raining earlier today, so I figured to leave it open. And I’ll do a separate video on what I have in there for those of you who are newbie and you know want to start your own compost or whatnot. We’re going to do a separate video on that. But I have my herb tower. I have my I have my parsley. These have been with me for a few months now. Um I think they are 3 months. So I started them indoors and they supplied me with a lot of parsley when they were indoors. The temperature was not ideal. They were indoors for two months and then I transferred them outside. So, they’ve been outside for about a month and I’ve harvested plenty of parsley since then. And I did sprinkle some seeds on this side to grow some more. And as you can see, like I did harvest some parsley the other day. So, we have new growth that are coming up. But I sprinkled some on this side and only one germinated. I don’t know why, but it looks like only one is going to um grow and and that’s fine. Parsley, y’all, this is super beginner friendly. If you guys are new to gardening, this would be a great herb to start with. As we move down, we have the basil. So, y’all, I this is my first time growing basil. By the way, disclaimer, it’s my first time growing most of the vegetables or plants that you guys are going to see in this video. I don’t know what’s going on with my basil. I think they’re about 2 months and I thought they would be further along than what they are right now and I’m not seeing that. So, if you guys can give me some tips, I’ve gotten feedback to remove the lower leaves. So, I’m going to be doing that just to kind of prune them. But other than that, maybe it’s a spacing issue. I don’t know. But my poss my basil is not looking so well. But I have my basil over here. And then I have time. I have thyme growing over here. I don’t know what I’m going to put on this side of the bed. But I am going to be planting something. Right now it’s just my time. Now as we move over here, I have my cabbages. And this is how my cabbages are doing compared to last time. This is my second time growing cabbages, y’all. So if you watch my old videos, you will see I did not know what I was doing. I was not fertilizing them. I wasn’t doing anything basically. But now I’ve been taking very very good care of them and I have a total of six cabbages and yeah, this is the cabbage bed. Y’all look at this. My first time growing flowers. Um, so this is forget me knots. I have three forget me knots in this bed and they are starting to bloom. Look at this y’all. Isn’t this pretty? Oh my goodness. I never considered growing flowers, but I research that they make great companion plants. So, make sure that you guys are filling your beds with flowers because they attract the pollinators, beneficial insects. They also repel the pest. So, yeah, this is how my cabbage beds are looking. Now, in this bed, I have two marolds that I planted. I had way more maragolds in there. I don’t know why I planted so many, but I since then removed them and moved them around and then I only have two in this container. First time growing merry golds. So, yeah. Now, today I just planted basil. So, yeah, we have some basil in here. We have um the purple basil and then the thigh basil. I don’t I forgot where I planted them. I did add the toothpick so I know where the seeds are. When you first plant seeds, you have to keep them soil or wet so that they can germinate. So, I have little toothpick so I know where to spray every day, you know, twice a day um until they germinate. But I have the purple basil and the thigh basil. And then in this corner I have Zenia. So today’s date, 4:10 is when I planted them. We’re supposed to be getting some more rain. So, I’m pretty sure they’re going to enjoy that. Now, over here, I have okra. So, I am going to be fitting this and just leaving one okra plant in here. But, I did plant this on April 28th. Today is May 10th. It’s been about 2 weeks and, you know, it sprouted, but I do have to thin it out. I’m only leaving one okra plant in this container. I don’t even know if this container is big enough. I hope it is. And then next to it, I have a merry gold. This is one of the merry golds that I took from that container. Again, that container was just filled with merry golds. So, and all of them germinated. I didn’t know they were all going to germinate, but they did. So, I had to remove and then move them around. Now, in this container, I have sweet bell peppers grown from seed, started indoors. And then next to it, I have some oregano. Look at how the oregano is doing, y’all. Look at this. But yeah, this is how the sweet bell peppers are doing. I love that it has the mushroom. Look at the mushroom that’s growing. So, I have just sweet bell peppers and oregano in this container. And then in this container, I have a another okra. I did plant some chives alongside the okra. None of them germinated, y’all. It’s been almost 20 days. They haven’t germinated yet. I don’t know why. Does it take that long for chives to germinate, but um so I’m going to have to find something else to plant in this container as a companion plant. I’m probably going to do basil cuz listen, you can never have too many basil, okay? But this is a second okra plant that I have. And then in this bed, we have my lettuce. So, I’ve harvested twice from this lettuce bed and I started this lettuce hydroponically indoors. They were grown in water or started in water and then a week later I transferred them to soil and since then I’ve harvested twice from the container. We have another forget me knot that I planted in the container as well. Isn’t this pretty? Oh my goodness. I’m gonna have like purple flowers in the garden. I love it. Now, this other container, I have sweet bell peppers that I started indoors. So, you see that this one is doing much better than this one. It’s like taller. You see where the flowers are going to be? You see them? So, we have a lot of flowers that are going to be popping up. And then I have oregano that’s also growing in this container. So, we have the sweet bell pepper and the oregano. And then in this container we have okra. So yeah, I have a lot of okra, y’all. And this my first time growing okra. I will have to thin it out. Just leave one in this container. I did plant some merry golds next to it. So yeah, we have we have a lot of okra. And then over here we have my other cabbage bed. You see they’re all doing well. I cannot wait to harvest these because I’m like thinking about what I want to grow in these containers once I harvest the cabbages. I have I have some crops in mind, but we need to harvest these first before I plant anything else in there. And my rosemary, y’all, my rosemary has been with me since day one, and it’s just been supplying and supplying and supplying. Y’all, if you guys have never tasted rosemary tea, I’ve added it to the list of one of my best one of my best teas. I tried it the other day. I just snipped off some rosemary. I boiled it in water for 15 to 20 minutes and I drank it. It was so fragrant, so flavorful, just so good. So, if y’all never tried rosemary tea, make sure you do. All right, y’all. So, in this bed, I have my carrots. Now, the carrots are about a year old. Yes, I’m not lying. I planted those in October. So, they’re about 7 months, not a year. Close though, but they’re about 7 months. And you see now that they are now starting to do something, right? And if you look below, I I scraped off like some of the dirt. I think I see what looks like a little carrot. So, I’m hoping to get a carrot or two in this container. I am going to be growing more carrots, but I’m going to start them in maybe towards the end of June for a fall harvest. But yeah, apparently carrots take a long time to grow and it I guess it depends on the weather conditions, right? It depends on your zone, it depends on the weather conditions, etc. But, um, I’m glad to see that it’s coming around. Hopefully, I’m not just gonna get carrot tops. Hopefully, we have some carrots that are that are growing under there. Now, I never fertilized this container. So, that might be an issue. I may just have the carrot tops. But yeah, the next time around, y’all, I promise I’ll do better. And then in this container, we have okra. And then on the side of it, I have some zenyas, but this is another okra plant. Now over here, we have my cucumber container. So I have a total of four cucumbers in this container. It is a 45gallon container. So I built a trellis in the middle and then I added two cucumbers on both sides of the trellis and then just having them climb up. Right? So, you see that I’m starting to get some cucumbers. I will definitely make a separate video on how to grow cucumbers. But my first time, y’all, my first time growing cucumbers. I started all of the cucumbers indoors. And this is how they are looking. And yeah, so I have my cucumbers. Now, I did have to add on to the trellis because they are Look, they’re getting taller, y’all. Look at that. So, this is where the trellis stopped, right? And then I had to add on to it. So, this is about I would say 5T 9 in. And it just it just wanted to keep growing. So, I added on and then as you can see, yeah, it’s still growing. So that is my cucumber container. Over here we have the jalapeno peppers. So you see that one is flowering all over the place. This one is going to flower, but the flowers have not opened up yet, but they will be flowering soon. I have some kitchen scraps that I planted. um kitchen scraps green onions that I planted. So, as you can see, that is doing well as well. And then I have some thyme. And then over here, y’all, we have some more cucumbers. We have two cucumbers in this grow bag along with bush bean. So, I do have more cucumbers that I am growing. I started these cucumbers from seed on April 13th and today is May 10th. So, they’re about a month old. And yeah, I haven’t fertilized them yet. I will be fertilizing them soon. As you guys can see, I also built a trellis for the cucumbers. So, I have two trellis. So, one going side to side and then one going on this side. So, I’ll have one of them trellis up and then this one trellis the other one. So, yeah, this is how this is looking right here. And then I have a bush bean next to them. I do have a bush bean in this container as well with the other cucumbers. So, as you can see, the other one on the other container is doing and looking much better than this one. And I did not think that it was going to outperform this one in here because this one germinated faster. It looked healthier. For this one, I had to remove it from this container, but it looked like it was dying. And then I transferred it here. And now look at it. It’s looking very good. So, I’m happy to see that. Now over here I have some more flowers, some more zenyas. So I added those on May 3rd. So it’s been about 7 days and they all germinated. So of course I’m going to have more flowers in the garden. I’m so excited, y’all, about growing flowers. I never thought I was going to grow flowers, but it is really important to add flowers to your garden. And then in this grow bag, I have I had a tomato sucker that I pulled from one of my tomatoes. I don’t know which one because I am growing three different varieties. I’m growing the beef steak. I’m growing large cherry tomatoes. And I’m also growing Roma tomatoes. I don’t remember which one I pulled the sucker from, but I am experimenting to see if it grows. Now, I did plant this sucker on April 21st, and it’s been about 20 days, and it looks the same, y’all. So, I don’t know if I need to add maybe some kind of root stimulator to get it going, but it’s not looking I mean, it’s not dying, but it’s not going anywhere either. Right. Right. It’s not getting bigger. Um, it looks like it rooted well because when I tried tugging it, it’s not coming up. So, so yeah, I might give it a little bit of nutrients, you know, just to see if if that will help it. So, I am attempting to grow a tomato sucker in this grow bag. If it does grow, then it will be the only tomato in this grow bag. This is again a 15gallon grow bag. And then I have two marolds next to it. These were the marolds again that were in the um cabbage container. And then over here we have okra, y’all. I have a total of five okra plants. I love okra. Those of you who are from the Caribbean, it is a staple. It’s my first time growing okra. I don’t know what’s happening over here, but you know, it looks like it’s doing well. And then I have a merry gold next to it as well. So, I have a total of six tomato plants, three different varieties. I’ll show you guys how they are looking. And then next to the tomatoes, I am growing um some basil. So, I have some basil. I have some merry golds, which don’t look like they’re doing well. I have some merry golds over here as well. Some merry golds over here, but they are tiny, y’all. I don’t know why they look like that. And look at the basil. I don’t know what’s going on with my basil. I really don’t. But I am going to be pruning these lower leaves and hopefully that helps. But these are my tomatoes. This one over here is a cherry tomato. Then we have beef steak. Then we have the large cherry tomato. Then we have beef steak. Then we have Roma and Roma. I had seven tomatoes. I gave one away to my neighbor. So now I have six plus the sucker that I’m growing in the other grow bag. I have another sucker that I’m growing indoors in water. So yeah, I’ll probably be adding more tomatoes to my garden. I did not think that I was going to be able to fit all of these tomatoes in my little backyard, but they all fit because of how I have them set up. And I will do a separate video of how I have everything, you know, just the setup that I have. That is pretty much it, y’all. This is a tour of my garden. And yeah, I hope you all enjoyed this video. If you did, make sure you hit the like and subscribe button. Don’t forget to check out my previous videos, and I will see you all in the next one.

Is the basil getting enough nitrogen?
I find most of my plants do better starting off indoors and then transferring.
