Volunteers helping keep Thurso weed-free were shocked to find their hard work apparently sabotaged with grass seed thrown in a rose garden at George Crescent.

The Thurso Beach Action Group (TBAG) was founded following an appeal from former community councillor Corinne Nicklin, who was dismayed by the state that the beach, esplanade, and Victoria Walk had become in recent times.

Earlier this month, the group’s members got their hoes and spades into action to make a difference across the town, and the rose garden at George Crescent was high on their list. After the weed-choked rosebed was cleared, the weedbuster volunteers were lauded by many for their hard work.

However, TBAG member Laurence Campbell shared images of what he believes is a deliberate attempt to sabotage the weedbusting team’s hard work. “There’s a gardener living across the road from the rosebed who said that it is definitely grass seed that’s been thrown in there,” he said.

“He’s envious and said he’s never seen it grow so quick!”

Joking aside, Laurence said he has a fair idea who the culprit is and said such actions will not deter the weedbusters from doing their work.

In a Facebook post on the TBAG page, he said: “To the morally repugnant individual(s) who thought it smart or fun to throw grass seed on the newly hoed and tidied beds, well done, but you won’t win.

“My good friends from the Thurso Beach Action Group and I will hoe it every night of the week to get every last seed out.

“You are not only vandalising a Thurso common good asset but also spitting in the face of everyone who is giving up their time willingly to make our town look a bit better. Instead of hiding, why don’t you lend a hand, [you] utter coward?”

Many replied to the post, including one woman who called it “pathetic, targeted, juvenile behaviour”. Iain Gregory added: “Very well said, Laurence. Whoever did that is beyond contempt. And yes, if need be, we will be there every single night until every single grass seed is gone.”
