NORMAL (25News Now) – A leader of the Humane Society of Central Illinois is turning a moment of tragedy into a celebration of the role pets play in human lives.

Losing a pet is painful, but Humane Society board member Eric Hoss wants people to know that there can be space to grieve that loss and to make room in the heart for a new companion.

Hoss lost his beloved dog, Holly, and wanted to do something to remember her by. That turned into a memorial garden, located on Kays Drive, complete with landscaping and flowers. In this space, people can meet pets at the Humane Society and can figure out if they are a good fit for their family.

“We always want to make sure that it’s a good match. We want to make sure that the pet’s personality is going to match with the person or family who takes them home because we want it to last for the rest of that pet’s life,” said Nicole Watts, the Humane Society’s executive director.

The more pets that get adopted, the more lives are saved. When a pet goes to its forever home, there is more space in the shelter for other animals in need of care.

Saturday, the shelter also participated in the national Clear the Shelters campaign, trying to get more animals into loving homes.
