Tried growing strawberries this year with very mixed success. I was lazy about watering and lots of the bare root babies died, and the ones left are extremely shrivelled. Should I expect them to die back over the winter? Should mulch them? Should I plant new plants? Thanks so much

Give them water and leave them be. They’ll die back over winter but come back in spring. Pot up any runners you get and you’ll soon replace the dead ones

Water them seems like an obvious answer

Use ericaceous compost and watch those straws thrive!

If there are any small runners? use small u shapped bits of wire to pin them down, that’ll enourage them to root and will hopefully give some free plants next year.

I split mine in late March this year and did have to water a lot but did well, doesn’t look like many survived so probably plant again with new plants early next spring, mulch with straw and water a few times a week until established.

Dig in some manure to bulk out that terrible compost (non peat is so variable it ridiculous)
