I found this while mowing a lot that hasn't been taken care of for a year or so. Could anyone help me identify it?

I am in southeastern Illinois. The few of these growing here ranged from 16-24" tall.

Cooperative Extension said that if I pull it, the “nuts” in the ground will grow more. I pull it over and over. Comes back smaller. Someone I know took their lawn out 6″ down to remove the “nuts.”

One of my two enemy plants. The other is Bermuda Grass.

I used Sedgehammer about six weeks ago to eliminate it. It did not die fast, but it is all gone now.
