I am trying to make my backyard patio area into a relaxing “oasis,” though I do not have a pool. Hardly any shade so I added two umbrellas. The area from which I took these photos is covered, which ends just before the bluestone paver steps. Otherwise it is sun all day.

Additionally, I removed the hostas seen in pics 2 and 3 because of my dogs.

There is a side yard on the other side of the deck deck. It is sloped so still have notified out a way to fence it in (that also looks good) for the dogs. What else would you add to this patio area? I am in zone 6b. Would like to add more (dog safe) plants, especially to replace the hostas i removed. Anything else to complete the “look”?

Thank you!

Something with height. A pergola. Anything

I would have have planted a smaller ornamental tree in the bed near where the one umbrella is (provides shade and is more attractive), and I’d replace one of the other shrubs along the fence with a small tree as well. If anything, I would get a nice, really large container with a sturdy bottom (so it can’t blow over in wind) and plant another small tree in it to have on the side that has no shade. A large, square wood container, stained to match any other wood) could keep a tree long enough to get a good little canopy. Better yet, put it on casters so you can move it around where you need it.
Other than that, just let it be and enjoy it. Embrace the ability to adit yourself; knowing when to quit adding details is a hallmark of good design.

Create height and divide into “rooms”. Tall planter box dividers. Maybe on wheels. Add area rugs. Maybe you can add a corn hole game if you like that kind of thing.

As it is, it feels weirdly cluttered, even with a lot of open space. I think you should pull the furniture away from the back wall and float it as if they are different rooms. And you can use that long log rack as a decorative screen/ divider. It also seems like it should be closer to the fire pit.
