I had to switch out the substrate structure about three weeks ago and now have water across the full bottom (20g long) at 2” depth. Shrimp are still going strong through the transition!! As the terrestrial and marginal plants grow in (as most are vine/trailing) they will cover any remaining substrate barrier still showing through today. I was trying to stay as natural as possible with my materials used, but these plastic storage baskets from the dollar tree have proven to be the best solution I could manage (couldn’t get egg create to work suspended and didn’t have the patience to keep at it). Since there’s now effectively 5 gallons of water, the parameters should stay stable enough for a few micro fish! I have some blue eye rainbow fry I’m thinking to add.
Terrestrial portion has a wetter and a dryer side (two different t baskets, one just skimming the top of the waterline, one is an inch above it). A million springtails, and at least 30 mixed powder isopods.
There should also be three vampire crabs! I know where two are living (both on the water’s edge!?). I’ve seen the third once or twice but not consistently in its “own spot”.
