I ordered a bunch of plants from a local company that delivers. The Texas Redbud looks terrible to me, so I asked to swap it out. They want me to plant it anyway and said they’d swap it out in 90 days if it doesn’t take.

I’m not thrilled with that timing, because I’m not going to be digging up and planting a new tree in December.

Those of you with more expertise with these trees, what do you think? Am I making too big a deal by asking for a new one? Will this probably be fine if I plant it?

👋 Based on that photo I’m not overly concerned. It’s August in Central Texas. Plants all look rough right now. That one just looks thirsty. It will drop leaves soonish anyway and be focused on roots for the next 6 months. If the tips are still supple and the leaves just look a little rough it’s probably fine. Prime tree planting season here is Oct-Dec so that’s not an odd time to be planting or trying again if needed. Keep in mind it can still be 80+ degrees here sometimes in December.

Ps Are you sure it’s a Texas redbud? We also get Mexican and Eastern redbuds here, and the eastern ones are more picky about water.

Yes they will be ok they just don’t like daily watering. A tree this size in the wild has a tap root that goes 10+ feet down. When the whole root system is saturated daily with it being this hot can cause this type of issue. If it’s severely root bound and mushy then consider returning as it can be difficult to rebound from girdle root rather than overwatering.

Mines gearing up to drop it’s leaves for the season and looks just like this! I wouldn’t worry

Looks like a tree I just got (tx mulberry). When I took it from its plastic pot I found it was very root bound. I bet repotting w fresh soil/ compost and more room for the roots, and a big watering will help these old leaves fall and new ones come out

Texas redbud’s resilience is insane, i’ve moved mine THREE TIMES trying to decide on a spot and it’s now so happy and healthy. It will be fine. Plant it.
