Between Light and Water: Sarah Schorr’s Artistic Journey in Monet’s Garden

On the 100th Anniversary of Claude Monet’s Death, American Artist Sarah Schorr Delves into the Legendary Impressionist’s Garden in Giverny – With a Unique, Contemporary Perspective.

In her book Ephemeral Field Journal: Climate & Love in Claude Monet’s Garden, published by Kehrer Verlag, Sarah Schorr presents more than just an art book—it is a sensitive, poetic journal that intertwines nature, art, and climate awareness.

Monet’s garden, which he designed in 1883 as a living laboratory for light, color, and time, serves as Schorr’s creative space. Inspired by the movement of water—from the gentle drops of rain to the flowing stream feeding the water lily pond—she collects fallen and injured flowers from the historic grounds. Schorr transforms this fragile, almost ephemeral flora into striking experimental still lifes using paint, light, paper, water, and photography.

Her works reflect a profound engagement with the fragility of nature. Through her artistic approach, she explores not only beauty and loss but also the complex interplay of climate change and impermanence. Her creations are both a tribute to Monet and a call for greater environmental awareness.

The book will be released in conjunction with an international exhibition tour of the project in 2025/2026, with stops in France, Portugal, Poland, and the United States—a powerful demonstration of how historical art sites can still tell new and relevant stories today.

Sarah Schorr is an American photographic artist, researcher, and educator, whose work is deeply rooted in the exploration of light, water, and embodied contemplation.
