Taking a look at how the container garden is filling in.

Hey everyone, Laurel here. Minnesota zone 5A. Um, just going to do updated container garden tour here. It’s been a couple weeks since I got everything planted. I’m not going to go plant by plant for every single one, but we’re just going to do an overview cuz things are really filling in nicely. So, first of all, you know what? Air conditioner’s on. We’ll go this way to start. We’ve got So, Fatalone Ace Hardware, if you are local, is having started doing 50% off clearance. They had these trays of 50 impatients for uh 10 bucks. I don’t need 50 impatience, but I couldn’t pass that up. I was just going to buy like a dozen, but that was almost 10 bucks on its own. So anyway, and their other annuals are 50% off. So we’ve got sort of the pink area over here. Pink, purple, white, I don’t know. Um the caladium have started sprouting here. I did make a note to myself this year of which was were which although I didn’t look them up before this video. Um I know we have spicy lizard. I grew that one last year and really enjoyed it. And Fiesta which are over there. Um the others I know the they’re not coming to mind. I know the names but I’d have to look at the look at my video real quick which is why I took it. So maybe in a future tour when we go one by one we’ll go over those. Um, otherwise things are looking much fuller. Elephant ears are starting to get some nice big leaves on them. Um, I think every container over here had some colladium in it, so that’ll be pretty. I’m also getting some of the perennials planted finally. Um, Kimberly Queen fern, beautiful. This Vinka is very slowly starting to vine. hoping by end of summer that will be trailed down. Um, so pleased with this area over here and the sort of coraly salmony orangey area as well. I think I saw a couple cladiums. I only had cladium in two pots over here. That one and I think this one. So, they’re a little bit slower. I have hostas. And then I bought a uh lung wart. That one’s Mrs. Moon. So, now I have to find a spot for that. Here we go again. Um, here you can see this beonia a little bit better this time. That like hot orange with beautiful bright yellow center on it. See if this will focus maybe. Really gorgeous. Got elephant ears. These impatients are the beacon coral and then couldn’t find superbina peachy keen. So this is the lenai peach superbina and I have two of those. And then the kolas I have two. And now somebody’s mowing their lawn. Oh well, it’s summer. It’s a nice evening. Um hopefully the noise cancellation on my microphone is good enough. Um, those are the elto colas. And we do have one bright pink impatient over here from last year. They selfseeded. I overwintered this mazu and they selfseeded in there. I did get all the seed geraniums potted up that I grew from seed. Um, really making a lot of progress. So, very happy about that. Over on this side, we’ve got the Lant Oh, and I left the umbrella up, so I guess that eliminates some of the glare. Um, but the Lantana Salvia sort of pink, red, yellow, orange area is really filling in nicely. So pleased with that. This Kofia is a little underwhelming so far, but I’ll give it time. It’s still early. Things are getting established. I was able to fertilize last week and today. Um, we’ve got the can of bloom starting. These are This is the toucan orange cana starting to put out some bloom heads. And this planter is so pretty. I think this is um we’ve got the Bandelero cherry sunrise lantana. That one gets big and bushy. Although this salvia is competing with it. I have three of just a fourpack salvia. Remember if it’s called lighthouse red possibly. There’s a nimisia nia magenta in there. And then a medusa sweet potato vine. I did let these sunflowers grow from the bird feeder and we have one that started to open here. Move a little bit closer. So this bloom is opening. This one has a bunch of blooms on its stock. So that’s fun. This one just has one bloom. So probably different kinds of sunflower seeds about to open but hasn’t quite yet. I did pot up move slowly so I don’t swing her around too much. I’ve been working all day long so I’m kind of pooped out now a little bit. Um potted up this beonia into a bigger pot. This is actually and then I didn’t think it was labeled. I got it at Menard’s like a bronze leaf red beonia but when I potted it up I found tucked way down in the plant can there was a label and it is actually baby wings bronze leaf red. So I looked up baby wings and it’s like a dragon wing beonia but just smaller smaller leaves. And then it also said they bloom earlier than the typical dragon wing beonas. Although to the consumer, I don’t think that’s as important. That’s more for the grower cuz by the time they get to nurseries, they’re already blooming typically. Potted up a couple over here, too. This planter is looking good. I just love this variety of Vinka. I’ll have to look. I think one of the plant cans that I overwintered. I got it super clearance last year. And I’ll have to look up. I think I bought another one this year and might like in Home Depot how they have the name like on a sticker on the plant cans that they come in or the nursery pots. I’ll have to look that up cuz that’s so cool. That’s a it was proven winners. I don’t know if they own it or not, but um and then the red verbina need to deadhead that. It was just full of blooms recently. Um that is the superbina red. We’ve got the mazu over here. And then this is the double redstone caliber co super bells. Really pretty. I’ve been giving everything iron. We got a lot of rain so things were stressed. I’ve talked about that. Although this week it dried out quite a bit. We were supposed to get maybe an inch yesterday but we didn’t get nearly as much as that. So a couple sale things. I also got these Super Bells uh double uh Smitten Pinks. I wanted to try those. And then this is the pink lemonade Super Bells. Really big blooms. I’ve had really good luck with this plant before in the past. So, it’s not going to stay here. I just have to still move things around. We got another seed geranium. And then, uh I have a plan. I just have to move some things around to get this arbivita planted. Um, let’s see. We looked over here at the geranium, but the Kent Beauty oregano is starting to really trail, put on a lot of growth. This planter will stay on the table. This has a Spanish lavender. Smells so good. But I love these blooms. And this is annual here. That is not a perennial. Um, this is the Twin Peach Snapdragon that I grew from seed. Really beautiful color. And then I have two Porchilaka nano. I can’t remember if I planted the nano pizzazz pink or pizzazz yellow in there, so it will be a surprise. I see them budding up. Um, but those are two porchilaka that will kind of trail. And then this one I found uh Menards was carrying a bunch of the new Proven Proven Winners ones. So, I tried the Mojave mango. It was really stressed in this plant can, but it’s bouncing back now since I repotted it. And then I did pick up a few things that and I have water cuz my throat’s dry right now. Um, few things on clearance to plant. I’ve got one more pot left and I’m going to do I found this totally tempted frosted violet. That’s a new Kofia from Proven Winners. So, I thought I would try that one. I picked up a mighty mosaic um kolas, two more of the henna colas. I have one planted up front so I can kind of complete that area. And then this is the um what we call it colorblaze mini mic colus in chartreuse which is a new color. I have two of the there’s one over here the mini me watermelon. So there’s this one and then the one in more sun is much brighter coloring. Um but I like they stay nice and compact unlike a lot of colas. Really easy to manage. So saw that on clearance and thought I should get it naturally. Uh here’s the other. We’ve got this colus with the biteins um rocking rocka what they call the proven winter world rockco. Now I’m Now I’m drawing a blank. I had to put this basket over this poor little um fuchsia. This is the fuchsia atamal. And I am getting some blooms on there. Normally the new growth has really bright chartreuse foliage. But the kittens, there are two feral kittens kind of roaming and they like to jump into this pot play and then they jump and drink from the bird bath. Like they stand in the water and drink from the bird bath. and they were just destroying that poor plant. So, I put this basket over it and taped it down to try and keep them off of it and hopefully it can recover. Still looking pretty rough, but we shall see. Caliber COA I cut back um week or two ago. It had really yellowed tips from the uh incredible amount of rainfall we got and it was just stressed from being transplanted. So, it’s bouncing back now and putting out some new blooms. And I’ve been treating it with iron. Of all the plants I grow, caliber koa most need iron. The chilated iron. Boy, it makes a difference for them. We’ve got another of the Proven Winners Bidens mixed with a Bandelista red chili lantana and then another magenta. Um, kind of repeat. We’ve got a lot of Lantana and Salvia over here. almost every container on this side. Well, every container does have one or the other. And aren’t these pretty? These started opening. Um, those are seed geraniums. The Maverick coral. I love that dark leaf and the coral blooms. I might try more from the Maverick line. Deraniums are fairly easy to grow from seed. This Lantana is so pretty. That is the B Proven Winners one. the I don’t want to dig the tag out. Um, basket tanglow and a uh purple prince alternate there I grew from seed. And then we have another um orange can of lily about to open. And here’s one of the tall salvia mixed with an angelonia and some more lantana. I’m waiting for this to take off the guacamole pleranthis down there. That’s one of my absolute favorite plants of all time. Can do sun or shade. Then this is the other mini me watermelon kolus here. Here in this container. Man, the air conditioner is still running. It was so hot. Um it’s Sunday now, July 6th, but we had like a one-day massive heatwave for the 4th of July. It got back up into the 90s with like due points in the 70s, so close to 100% humidity. Luckily, it was breezy. I was able to come out in the morning and get some things potted up. Um, and then in the evening, it cooled down once the shade hit, but holy smokes, air conditioner got a workout for sure. And it was super humid yesterday, even though it cooled down about 15°. Just can’t win. But today was gorgeous, so we at least get one day. Um, we’ve got the Surefire White Beonia. So far, looking okay. It had some burned leaves, but uh I think now it’s recovering. I like this little It’s just kind of a random planter. And the uh hein bean wine is starting to climb. I did There’s one strand going up the string that I attached to the uh overhang there. And then um I have an ornamental cabbage in there too. I grew that from seed. Those are such um like uh statement plants, like statement pieces. Um this is doing well. This verbena’s I should probably trim. I have this snowstorm white bakopa in there. Probably need to keep that trimmed so it doesn’t take over the verbena too much. But this was a new variety that I’ve been seeing around and uh took a little took a minute to kind of get its feet, but now it’s getting established. The bakopa, not a ton of blooms right now, but bakopa kind of does that. I’ve grown that for many years. I used to grow it every single year, then kind of took a break. But, uh, it’ll be like totally It’s one of those plants that’s like totally full of blooms and then just a little bit like it lulls and then totally full of blooms again. I got this new strawberry Sunday by Danzinger uh, caliber co. I just love the color on that. Got that potted up with a portulaka that I grew from seed. And I guess we’ll just have to deal with the AC over here. So, this is filling in nicely. My kind of blue and white. I tried something different, more not quite monoculture, but I did more monoculture type pots. Um, still not super impressed with this star flower here. Looks kind of messy and hasn’t been blooming all that much. So, I might scoot that around and hide it a little bit more and feature swap it with a different pot where I can feature something a little more pretty. Although, I love this artisia. I don’t know the name of it, but this little licorice plant so pretty with like dainty leaves. White out verbena and hoopla vivid orchid super tuni. I have two of them. Two super tunias and one verbina in there. I do need to trim this back. I like this dark bloom color. I think it needs it in this area like kind of grounds it. Everything would maybe be a little bit too light without that dark bloom, but this one is taking over. This is the um indigo super tuni mini vista indigo. That one was smaller, so it’s a little bit slower to get going. This caliber koa is also recovering. And then we’ve got the superbina sparkling amethyst here with a dicandra silver falls. I just love that this is two two plants in here and it’s just getting started. So that that kind of lulled while it got settled into its pot and now it’s just going to go for it. I’ve been having I’ve had a couple now couple containers where I’m seeing signs of thris. So, I’ve been using neem oil. You always want to make sure to use that not in direct sun or it will burn your plant as well as killing aphids or thris or whatever. But, uh, superbina seems pretty resistant to that so far. Last year, I did have one that got thris, but you couldn’t tell it. They didn’t damage the plant like they did the caliber koa that was in the same planter. Oh, boy. Now there’s a plane going over. All right. Noise cancellation. Hope you’re doing your thing. Just can’t win today. Um, we did this is the tiara blue super tuna, the new one this year from Proven Winners. And then I have some those little white blooms sticking up our dia trinity white dia. This is just so eye-catching. I really hope it doesn’t get leggy and fizzle out halfway through the season cuz man, isn’t that gorgeous? This stuff is so pretty. That white center just really pops. Uh this salvia just starting to excuse me throw up some new bloom stocks. I did deadhead it and trimmed everything off. So takes a couple weeks once you transplant everything for it to get caught up, work on its roots before it sends out new blooms. And then in this planter, we’ve got the Superbina uh violet ice along with the storm burst. That one I wasn’t so sure about. I did overwinter it, so it started off really tiny, but hopefully it catches up because it’s such a pretty bloom. Just potted this up today. I got a snowstorm blue bakopa. I had two um VC Victoria blue. Well, I had a flat of Victoria blue salvia, but one of them ended up being Victoria white, which I kind of liked. So, I did one blue and one white in here. And then this plant, I got this. It’s so cool. I got this on clearance last summer. Well, one of these um put it in the ground and it did awesome all the way until we got like a freeze. It was just unbothered and was such beautiful foliage. It is a the tag here. Sorry, Caprosma. So, I hadn’t heard of it before. I haven’t done much research, but it does say they it likes sun to part shade. Um, yeah, easy to grow. It was great last year. Put that back in there. So, they went on clearance now, and I’m glad I was able to pick up another one. I uh have a purple Rex beagonia to go in the center there, but I put it out in the sun too quickly. I thought it would have been conditioned cuz I kind of had it back here, but it got real fried, so I’m letting it live down there and slowly creeping it out so it can get used to more sun bit by bit. Um, but I have a purple elephant ear and a green one in here. looking good. And then the sweet potato vine and um survea and lime plectranthus. I do have a plan for my extra can of ptoria and the two extra elephant ears that I have. I’m just too tired to get to that tonight. This planter, I love this combination. I did this last year, too. the blue scavola with the um senio angel wings and dicondra silver falls. That’s about the lowest maintenance pot you could possibly do. All my amarillis are out here getting their full sun for till the end of Augustish. That pot in the corner I still have to pot up. And then the white light and dark over here is looking good too. This is another scavola white one in the front here. Oh, there’s a cat. I love this. Um I think it’s called Mercury. Um this dusty miller. It is so cool. I hope I can find I saw it a couple places this year, so I’m hoping I can do that again cuz I love that. And then I have your other don’t remember the name of that variety, but it’s a common one you find everywhere. But I like this white angelonia, too, because it’s kind of mingling. And you see how it’s like coming through like the stems are kind of leaning and bending and popping through the sweet potato vine. I think that looks really pretty. I really like these containers. These are the fullest because they are the first ones I planted. And then just look at that snow princess alysum on the back. Just it is so full. That one just blooms like nothing else. And maybe we could take a quick look at some of the pots out in the landscape here. So, we have some They’re looking really good. Just love this view. Looking down here. Oh, there. Now, the air conditioner shuts off as soon as we walk away. That’s how it goes. So this guy over here um super tunia mini vista yellow is like engulfing everything and that is one single plant in there engulfing like everything in this pot. So I will have to keep that trimmed which it will benefit from. Um the plant will stay fuller that way and not get leggy. I do want to see more of this Wy Ki sunset, this Makia because I love the variegated foliage on that. And then I do have it a dicandra silver falls down there. Blue mohawk rush grass. I love how it’s mingling with the patunia. And then the hippo white polka dot plant, hippoesties. I’ve got my little pot of seed deraniums down here. These ones I impulse bought, but I’m glad I did. None of them were labeled, so I kind of had to guess from how they were blooming. And I thought I got two dark and two light ones, but I don’t know. They might be just one dark. Either way, it’s pretty. All of my beautiful selfseed or they seed themselves every year. These little patch of viola over here. Clatus is now starting to a little bit slow down, go out of bloom. Um, but we’ve got the hanging basket over here looking good. The pink loofos did start blooming, trailing and blooming here. So, I’m pleased about that. This is the tiara pink superunia. I think this basket will really take off once the uh clatus is done blooming. And I cut back that branch that’s kind of hanging over. I mean, it looks gorgeous together. Like, they look absolutely beautiful together. But the clatus doesn’t bloom all summer. So that will once those blooms are done, then I’ll cut that branch back so that this container can get full sun and really take off. And this is the sparkling rose superbina, the pink version. I have found though that this one isn’t compared to the sparkling amethyst version. Um kind of the same line. This one’s the blooms aren’t quite as vigorous or large. But still pretty. Did a lot of work over here today. So I’ll show that in my next video. But we’ve got the again Goldilocks rocks. That’s what they’re called. Goldilocks rocks bidins from Proven Wyinners. And those kind of lull too. That’s another plant any Bidens I’ve ever grown. They’re full of blooms. Then they lull a bit while they put on new buds and they’re full of bloom. So just be aware of that. Here’s another super tuni minivista yellow. This one was smaller and planted later than the original one, but I’ll have to watch this because I’m assuming it will get just as big probably. And then this is a um sunpatient. Um I don’t want to grab the tag. My back hurts too much to lean over. I did so much work today. Um but it has that beautiful variegated leaf in the hot pink bloom. I love sun patients. I just don’t plant a lot of them because the Japanese beetles also love them. So I don’t like having them all chewed up. Um, but then we’ve got two pots just of the um wax beonia, bronze leaf, pink and white. It’s just a mix over here. These are super low maintenance. Beonas are so um drought tolerant. They just don’t take a whole lot of work and and the bronze leaf ones can do full sun or full shade. The green leaf varieties of wax beagonia definitely need uh more shade. They can do some sun, but not a lot. So, and we’ll walk to the back. Another lawn mower going. Unsurprising because the last two days were like unbearable to do. You do not want to do any yard work. So, tonight feels amazing. I’ll eat my dinner out here in a little bit. A lot more blooms on the raspberry zahara zenyas. Raspberry ripple. Starlight rose. I think that’s what the other one’s called. I think the double one is double raspberry ripple. Starlight rose. Not a lot of them yet. They’re white and they have this pink streak, but a lot of them are just looking white so far, but it is still early. And then the angel face pink angelonia from Proven Winners. And let’s see. Let me check on these pots. These geraniums over here that I popped in this little planter were super stressed when I planted them. They waited way too long in their plant cans. Um, so they’re taking a minute. They’re looking better though. Their leaves aren’t all yellowed anymore, but they’re taking a minute to get full. Love this witches brew colus. Such like striking foliage on this one. That was new to me this year. This one’s interesting. This is the super tunia black cherry and it’s kind of doing this like stripey thing which I don’t hate. Very pretty. And then this is a super cal or petcoa. Um the tag’s in there, but again I don’t want to reach over and grab it. But I love that white with the yellow throat. And let’s see. Try not to step on anything over here. You can see vegetables are just wow they’re getting really full. And then this is my little herb and flower container. So I’ve got some maragold, some herbs, and a little salvia Victoria blue in the center there. My onions are bulbing. I’m going to have real onions. This is the first year I’ve grown onions. And I haven’t tried any kind of onion crop in the ground before, so it was also an experiment. We’ve got this little planter over here. So, we’ll take a look at this. Oh, stepped in a hole. Um, we’ve got the can rose snap dragon, which I started from seed now. Kind of it’s got a few blooms left, but I’ll dead head that soon. Bermuda Beach Super Tuna. Um, this one’s finally again verbina kind of lulls and then blooms. That is the is that called cherry ice or something from uh Proven Winners. And then this is the lemon lime pleanthis which will get large. This one was kind of small. I think they grew it from a cutting at the nursery where I got it. So it wasn’t huge. I might move this pot out a little bit because these cosmos are starting to get big right behind here. So, and I think that’s it. I won’t show you up front. There really aren’t any changes from my last video. Up front, those containers are still looking good. I have a container with some beonas and a repeat of the blue scavola dicondra silver falls and the um senio angel wings. So um and then this pot things are getting a little bit shaded out. I’ll have to trim off some more leaves from these sunflowers so that things can get more sun. And I need to deadhead this real bad. But this is this is one plant, but it’s two or three years old now. Um I keep overwintering it, but it will not fit in my basement this year. So um the Collia rose mega splash geranium or pelargonium. It’s really fun if you can overwinter them just how much bigger they can get. Geraniums that is. And then the mimulus down here, monkey flower. So far so good. I haven’t grown those before and they’re doing great. So, I think that is all I just have. You can see just so few things left to plant up here. Some to give away, some I’m babying along till I decide what I want to do with them. And this I love this striped leaf. This is the canoptoriia. I save all the tubers from year to year. I’ve had these for well over 10 years now. Um, same thing with the elephant ears. Just dig them up in the fall, stick them in a box, and then clean them up and plant them out in the spring. So, easy peasy. So, I will leave you with that. Thank you so much for watching and I hope you all have a great day. Bye-bye.

  1. Just gorgeous, Laurel! Please tell us how to over winter Mezoo or propagate as mine is HUGE. Will you be trimming the Diacondra Silver Falls? Do you know if it's cuttings will root in other pots? I am Zone 4 MN.

  2. Love that dusty miller …I missed it in my planting this year 🙁 I’m going to go see if I can find some. Your pots are filling out beautifully

  3. Based on your tip from last year, I booked it up to Ace in Arden Hills to look for sale plants last week. Bingo! That’s really a nice Ace garden center. I got some PW annuals that I hope will take over my half-sun garden. Thanks for your beautiful container tour!

  4. Hey laurel! I absolutely love your pot area! How much potting soil do you go through and how come you chose to do that instead of putting them all in your garden? Deanna @gardensglory

  5. Beautiful containers✨I was gifted elephant ears tubers and they are doing fantastic, however I don’t leave them in full sun. I have them in a large container and it’s silly but I move it around so they don’t burn. The pot is bigger than me and it’s just so heavy. Can you advise how much sun exposure to provide? Thank you kindly💚
