CLARKSTON, Ga. — On Aug. 18, preschoolers from Early Learning Scholars learned about hydroponics and gardening during Clarkston Mayor Beverly Burks’ Tots Town Hall.

Burks recently qualified to run for reelection and will face Sean Alexander-Brite in the Nov. 4 city election.

The educational session took place at the Clarkston Woman’s Club on Church Street and was supported by a grant from CDF Action.

Mayor Burks launched the Tots Town Hall program last year, hosting quarterly learning sessions that each focus on a different topic designed to engage young minds.

“What I want to do with this program is expose our children who are 5 and under to government, sustainability, and education—getting them familiar with terminology and things in their community,” Burks said. “It’s a wonderful way to educate them about things they see and let them know more about life in general.”

Beyond civic education, Burks emphasized that literacy plays a central role in each session.

“Every time we do this, we typically have someone read a book to them. Sometimes we even have the books read in different languages as well,” she said. “It’s always that exposure for our children, helping them understand not only from a literacy perspective, but also about their overall community and government.”
