If you planted Romaine, that’s probably what it is. As PP said, it’s bolted. Lettuce is very much a cool season plant. Early spring, mid autumn.

I was in the exact same situation as you right a month ago OP. As someone mentioned, it’s cos/romaine lettuce, though there are a few variations of the lettuce. We have the stalk kind. lol
We bought some lettuce seeds from Home Depot months ago but we forgot what type of lettuce it was. Our lettuce grows as yours as well and has small buds like it as well. After doing some research, figured out it was cos/romaine.

That’s what romaine looks like if you try to grow it in hot weather. It bolts: makes flowers and seeds, and bitter, latex-filled leaves.
You can save the seeds to plant in fall if you want tasty leaves.
