  1. So funny I plant earlier and they do better. I take a risk put some seeds out before the frost date taken a chance and this year I got zucchini. Now I have some plants but not doing well

  2. It was fascinating to remove the grubs from my plants… i thought it was gross.. my kids found it cool…. Blech

  3. I pulled my squash during the last week. Not worth it. Had them. I'll plant less next year in another spot. I let spots go unused each year too.

  4. I planted later middle of July still got hit by vine borer. Hopefully the ones i just planted 2 weeks ago will make it.

  5. I planted early this year, got a good harvest. Pulled everything out and covered my beds with black tarps for 4 weeks, replanted the beds a few weeks ago. So far they are looking good.

  6. I've had such a time with MBB on my bush beans this year. All the farms near me planting soy. Luckily no SVB

  7. Very timely for me in Alabama. I actually planted some zucchini yesterday! Hoping for a better crop than I've had in the past. It's been disappointing for years but I'm excited to see what happens with this "late" sowing!

  8. You wouldn't be able to do this with pumpkins in Michigan. Some of them take over 100 days. First frost date is usually mid October. In my backyard I have to capture the moths, use Neem or insecticidal soap for the eggs, and a contact residual for the caterpillars (not grubs!).

  9. The ones i planted in may got it, the ones in june got it, the ones in july got it, but i have grown a new set in the past couple weeks and am putting them in ground now. Do not have high hopes. Oh and the yellow squash not yet dead from it now lost its squash to pickleworms

  10. They attacked all my spaghetti squash. I was able to pull out 4 borers-the first time I even tried doing that. I’m just hoping what I have left on the vine will ripen . Does spaghetti squash ripen off the vine?

  11. Planted zucchini in June and they were eaten by squash vine borer. Planted four pumpkin seeds the first week of July, and no signs of those pesky grubs!

  12. Not best advice honestly. First because whether planting later even makes sense depends on zone, but also because the early part of the season is the most productive. I started going out each day ir every other day and simply looking under leaves and removing any egg clutches I notice which are pretty easy to spot. Dramatically improved and extended my yield and I've been growing curcubits for well over ten years now.

  13. I wish this worked in the southeast US. We get borers through the full season unfortunately. Just pulled out my second planting because of them. May be able to sneak a 3rd one in here before frost.

  14. Here, in Central Texas, we get 2 life cycles of the SVB. I'm planting more squash today but I'm adding netting for first time. Fingers crossed! Waltham Butternut gets hit but DOES NOT DIE! Where shall I store all these winter squashes (40ish)?

  15. I believed you guys. Did not work for me. Getting ready to plant a third round. My squash planted in May got Vine Borer and the squash I grew from seed planted the first week of August (and had vines about 2 feet long) just died from vine borer.

  16. Hey Luke I've noticed you've started mentioning a more precise time for when you are doing things in your garden, and it's been immensely helpful! Thank you so much!

  17. perfect timing as i just lost like six different pumpkins along with a zuccini and a cucumber all over the course of like two weeks towards the end of july lol. i say lol but i wanted to scream for days because i got one beautiful perfect pumpkin now the bed looks like i planted nothing. will be doing the absolute most next year and beyond

  18. I'm in SW OH, zone 6b. Just went out & planted 4 seeds of zucchini. I plant every year in July, but this year, critters dug up everywhere I planted. Every time. Amazing how they know I planted seeds. Hopefully, these will be allowed to grow.

  19. Had my first successful (for the bug) SVB on Sugar Pie pumpkin. Pulled it all out and found it. Powdery mildew suddenly decimated it. No issues before this year.

  20. Last year I planted in containers and I got zucchini squash. This year planted many of them, moved the containers to a new yard, and every one of them got attacked and died, several batches too! Waltham Butternut squash however, did just fine this year in container and produced 2. TY and God Bless!!!

  21. I tried everything and nothing works for vine borers. I planted late for the last 2 years and have no issues. It’s the only way.

  22. I had leggy winter squash seedlings last year. When I got around to planting them, it was very windy. In an attempt to keep the wind from damaging them, I piled old straw up around the stem until only the end leaves protruded out of the straw. Out of the 24 plants I put in, NONE suffered borer damage. Circumstances prevailed, and I didn't grow this year. Hopefully, I'll get squash in next year and see if the straw protects them or I just got lucky.
