The trip aimed at viewing the various displays in St Magnus Cathedral in Kirkwall, The theme was one of music because of the 100th year of the cathedral organ.

Club chairwoman Carol Place said the displays gave the members inspiration for their own flower show which is coming up next week on Tuesday, September 2.

A visit was also made to the Yard Plant Nursery in Kirkwall, which is run by volunteers. It promotes therapeutic gardening for the community which is said to benefit all age groups and needs. They were also able to offer advice on what will grow and propagate in northern gardens.

Carol said: “We also found time to do some shopping and visit another local garden centre. We had a wonderful stay at the Lynnfield Hotel and a fun quiz evening after dinner.

“The next day was a visit to Greens Garden at Toab. Prem, the owner, took us on a tour around his amazing garden, which he started on a hillside by the sea. Prem was very informed as to what will grow in a harsh environment and advised us to experiment and try different plants.

“He uses recycled materials, collects disused stone for garden walls and driftwood furniture and supports for shelter for the plants.

“This was a very inspiring visit which gave us many ideas for our own gardens.”

The day concluded with a visit to the Shelia Fleet workshop and café in a beautifully converted church.

Carol added: “The weather was warm and sunny which added to a very informative and fun time had by all. We returned very inspired for our forthcoming flower show.”
