In 2024, garden tool imports into Australia soared to 80 tons, jumping by 115% against 2023. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a dramatic shrinkage. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at 2.5K tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2024, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, garden tool imports expanded sharply to $8.2M in 2024. In general, imports saw a mild expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 45% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $13M in 2022; however, from 2023 to 2024, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports By Country
In 2024, China (58 tons) constituted the largest garden tool supplier to Australia, accounting for a 73% share of total imports. Moreover, garden tool imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the United States (4.2 tons), more than tenfold. India (4 tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 5% share.
From 2013 to 2024, the average annual growth rate of volume from China amounted to -25.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United States (-11.7% per year) and India (-33.0% per year).
In value terms, China ($6.2M) constituted the largest supplier of garden tools to Australia, comprising 76% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United States ($366K), with a 4.5% share of total imports. It was followed by India, with a 4.2% share.
From 2013 to 2024, the average annual growth rate of value from China totaled +3.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United States (+9.2% per year) and India (-5.3% per year).
Import Prices By Country
In 2024, the average garden tool import price amounted to $101,759 per ton, falling by -51.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2023 when the average import price increased by 2,382%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $208,200 per ton, and then shrank significantly in the following year.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2024, amid the top importers, the highest price was recorded for prices from Vietnam ($112,200 per ton) and China ($106,213 per ton), while the price for the UK ($84,160 per ton) and Taiwan (Chinese) ($85,031 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2013 to 2024, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Vietnam (+43.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
ExportsAustralia’s Exports of Garden Tools
In 2024, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in shipments abroad of garden tools, when their volume increased by 19% to 159 tons. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a perceptible contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 232%. The exports peaked at 261 tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2024, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, garden tool exports skyrocketed to $1.8M in 2024. Overall, exports continue to indicate a temperate increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 178%. The exports peaked at $2.5M in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2024, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports By Country
New Zealand (111 tons) was the main destination for garden tool exports from Australia, accounting for a 69% share of total exports. Moreover, garden tool exports to New Zealand exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Papua New Guinea (26 tons), fourfold. Kenya (4.5 tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 2.8% share.
From 2013 to 2024, the average annual growth rate of volume to New Zealand amounted to -3.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Papua New Guinea (+23.9% per year) and Kenya (0.0% per year).
In value terms, New Zealand ($1.3M) remains the key foreign market for garden tools exports from Australia, comprising 69% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Papua New Guinea ($298K), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by Kenya, with a 2.8% share.
From 2013 to 2024, the average annual growth rate of value to New Zealand totaled +5.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Papua New Guinea (+20.8% per year) and Kenya (0.0% per year).
Export Prices By Country
The average garden tool export price stood at $11,330 per ton in 2024, increasing by 29% against the previous year. Overall, export price indicated a strong increase from 2013 to 2024: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.0% over the last eleven years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2024 figures, garden tool export price increased by +53.5% against 2021 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 75% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $11,683 per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2024, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Average prices varied noticeably for the major export markets. In 2024, amid the top suppliers, the highest price was recorded for prices to Vanuatu ($11,331 per ton) and Solomon Islands ($11,331 per ton), while the average price for exports to Germany ($10,000 per ton) and Fiji ($11,320 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2013 to 2024, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to New Zealand (+8.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
