very peppery smelling fruit(?) found in franklin county, NC
there’s a tree out in the back area of the land i live on full of these. they’re golfball sized, very fragrant, and stained my fingers yellow when i cut it open. anyone have an idea on what it is?
Black walnut “fruit”, Juglans nigra. This is the husk with nut inside.

As others have said, black walnut. Your fingers/hands are about to be dyed black/brown for a while.

Don’t let it’s juices get on anything you like, it’s a powerful natural dye, it oxidizes a very dark brown.

They are the blue cheese of walnuts. Not for me as they taste rancid. (I like blue cheese these are just not it)

Collect them and lay out on a tarp, let sit a few weeks, use a lawn roller to smash the pulp, then use gloves to clean the black/brown mess. Check nuts for holes, good ones can be stored, iffy ones crack open, roast the nut meat and freeze. (Side note my great grandma made us kids clean them off, my hands and arms were always stained brown a few weeks every fall).
Also, “nut meat” is a funny term, hadn’t thought of it in years.

Why dont yall just use the Google photo lookup for something like this? Finding a walnut in the eastern US is like finding a penny in a spare change jar🤣

If you can still cut them open, I’m pretty sure it’s the perfect time to make nocino (black walnut liqueur). There are lots and lots of recipes if you search.

Those get very stinky at times!

Looks like an underripe black walnut. After the shell fully hardens it will take either a black walnut cracker, or take outside on the driveway and smack with a hammer. Will break a standard hand held nut cracker. My mom used to occasionally make a delicious black walnut cake out of black walnuts harvested from my great grandmother’s house

They are a natural anti-parasitic. Very good to eat.

It amazes me how so many people ask for ids of literally the most common plants where they live as if they’ve never been outside.

Black walnut. I used to keep a couple of these in my car during high school as air fresheners. You have to chuck them after a while, but they smell really nice until they start turning black

It covers the grays in your hair really well. If you have dark hair of course.

If that is indeed a black walnut, you can 1) harvest very tasty nuts if you’re willing to bust into the very hard shells, or 2) make Nocino, the Italian walnut liqueur (but you should harvest them on June 24).
Frankly I’m surprised this nut was soft enough to break into. The inner shell should have started forming by now.

We have a tree in our yard. It’s always fun to trip on one 😆 black walnut
