Learn the perfect equation for container garden design with Hannah Chancellor, the Dixon’s summer Horticulture Intern!
The key to a stunning container garden lies in the balance of thrillers, fillers, and spillers. This combination creates dynamic, eye-catching arrangements that add beauty and dimension to any garden or green space.
Thrillers are the “stars of the show”—typically taller, statement-making plants like the Variegated Shell Ginger (Alpinia zerumbet) used in this video. Fillers offer color and texture to support the thrillers; Hannah used Fiber Optic Grass (Isolepis cernua) and a peach-colored lantana. Spillers cascade over the edges, adding movement and guiding the eye. For this design, Hannah used Silver Falls™ (Dichondra argentea).
Tune in for tips to help prevent leaf burn and ensure proper drainage for your container. You’ll be ready to create a beautiful container garden of your own—don’t be afraid to get creative!
