Hi everyone,

Attached are two photos of my Alocasia. The previous owner never rotated it, so it grew leaning heavily toward the sun. It’s been growing fast, and to prevent it from snapping under its own weight, I had to set up this temporary support system (see photos).

My question is: how can I properly fix this?

  • Should I repot it into a larger planter and try to straighten it?
  • If yes, what planter size would be appropriate? The current planter is 13 x 13 inches. Would that mean I need something at least 25 inches tall to help it stay upright, or is there another approach?

Any advice from those who’ve dealt with a leaning Alocasia (or similar plants) would be super helpful!

I’ve never done this myself, but I know it is possible to chop it in two and root the top bit again. The lower part will grow new leaves so you’ll have two plants! 😍 There may be some corms in that pot as well!

Edited to add: You could even cut the stem into three bits to ‘fix’ the worst of the leaning issue. Just make sure you don’t mix up which side was ‘up’ for the middle piece of you want to try to reroot that one too!

  2. You can try “airlayering” some moss half way at the stem and hope to get good root growth there – them chop and replant.

How do you get plants like this? Genuine question. Every time I buy a plant it dies as soon as I leave the store.
