Gardeners can give their lawns a major boost with a key job this week, an expert says. The UK has seen a summer of record-breaking heat, with four heatwaves and the hottest June on record in England.

Lawns can struggle in the summer months under baking sun and when rain is far less common, meaning it’s key to keep up a consistent watering schedule, while also making sure you don’t overwater. But as the end of summer approaches, there is a simple job you can do in August that will allow the grass in your garden to capitalise on the balmy conditions Britain is currently seeing.

Sowing is key for growing new lawns as well as kickstarting growth in existing ones, and the next few days could be the right time to do it.

Chris McIlroy, lawn expert at The Grass People, told Ideal Home that “August is a good month for sowing, as the higher temperatures mean the soil is also nice and warm.”

He added: “This is great news for germination, as it can help speed up the process.”

August wraps up at the end of this week on Sunday, the 31st, meaning you’ve still got a few days to give your lawn a shot in the arm.

Meanwhile, Lindsey Hyland, founder of Urban Organic Yield, shared how a simple kitchen item can be used to help keep your lawn weed-free.

“Weeds tend to thrive in environments with access to sunlight and moisture, and by using sugar on your lawn, you can make it less hospitable for these weeds,” the expert said.

“Sugar will help break down thatch, the layer of dead grass, and other organic material that can accumulate on your lawn over time.

“This thatch can make it difficult for new grass to grow, but using sugar on your lawn can help break it down and improve the health of your lawn.”
