I’m considering building a large “Black Desert” style terrarium (about the size of an under-TV display tank shown on the image above) with black sand/rock instead of the usual red or tan desert setups. The goal is to keep it naturalistic and bioactive, but with a darker, desert look. i’ve searched and the only natural biomes with this feel of black sand and rocks would be the volcanic deserts and “ black beaches “ i think there called.

my question is would a black sand/black rock desert setup be safe and practical long term for a Snake or reptile of some sort? maybe a Mexican black Kingsnake Or hognose , or would the color/heat absorption cause issues?

and Has anyone run bioactive desert setups with succulents + cleanup crew under sand? How well do they hold up?

    Hey UsedKey5088

Did you know succulents have adapted to grow and thrive in areas with limited water sources, dry periods, and bright direct light? Most terrarium spaces are the exact opposite of that which can cause terrariums to fail! If it’s your first terrarium don’t fret, we have a list of resources to help you build a successful and happy terrarium!
