The 90th Wellington Flower Show took place on Saturday with organisers making 50 years of holding the event at Wellington School.

Here is the full report from secretary Sheena Page, followed by all the results and a couple of special show photos …

It was an extremely successful event, with an excellent number of entries despite a very challenging growing season.

In the main hall, fabulous fuchsias and dazzling dahlias led the field in the flower and pot plant sections, along with amazing fruit and veg, while, in the classrooms, Fat Rascals and fantastic photos were on display.

The floral art section was particularly strong this year, with more entries than ever and a very high standard. Judge Beverly Wood said it was challenging to judge, such was the high quality of the exhibits.

It was pleasing to see an increase in the number of children’s exhibits and good to see more youngsters taking part. Next year, we’ll hope for even more!

As well as viewing the exhibits, visitors were able buy plants from Riverside Plant Nurseries who kindly stepped in at short notice. Plants were also available from the WI stall, along with the customary jams and marmalade.

Wellington-based Alex Williams was also selling beautiful prints and cards and Michelle Bailey had a stall with lots of lovely craft items.

Huge thanks go to WI members who kindly supplied some of the cakes for refreshments which are part and parcel of the flower show.

Thank you to Alex Battison, Head of Wellington School, who presented the cups – appropriate for our 50 years at the school.

We are grateful to all who sponsored the various sections of the show: Sheppy’s Cider, Yalham Hayes Flower Farm, Risdon’s Solicitors, Willowbrook Nursery and Webbers estate agents. We’re also grateful to local businesses who advertise in our schedule.

Without our sponsors and advertisers, the show would not survive, as on the day, expenses outweigh income.

The show wouldn’t be possible without entries from all our exhibitors so thank you to all you growers, flower arrangers, bakers, knitters and photographers and to all the children who produced such innovative exhibits.

We are also grateful to our judges who give so freely of their time and expertise and to the committee who work so hard to put on such a great show.

And finally, thank you to all who came along to the show, including Gideon Amos MP and his wife Caro who purchased some delicious WI marmalade.

We hope to see you all at our Spring Show in April – date to be confirmed.
